Gen schwartz on f136 alternate engine

Gen Norton Schwartz, chief of staff of the US Air Force, addressed the National Press Club "newsmaker luncheon" on 12 October 2010. Asked about his opinion on the wisdom of funding two engines for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, Schwartz reaffirmed Bush and Obama Administration policy to cancel the alternate F136 engine made by General Electric and Rolls-Royce. He conceded that the F136 program could ultimately save taxpayer money in the long run, but he prefers that GE and Rolls pays more of the upfront bill to complete development.

The GE Rolls-Royce Fighter Engine Team has successfully completed Short Take Off, Vertical Landing (STOVL) testing on an F136 engine at the GE testing facility at Peebles, Ohio. The F136 engine is the most advanced fighter aircraft engine ever developed and will be available to power all variants of the F-35 Lightning II aircraft for the US military and eight partner nations.
