Connection between quantum physics and consciousness

Connection Between Quantum Physics and Consciousness
www.encognitive.com We may suspect that quantum mechanics and consciousness are related, but the details are not at all clear. In this paper, I suggest how the mind and brain might fit together intimately while still maintaining distinct identities. The connection is based on the correspondence of similar functions in both the mind and the quantum-mechanical brain. Accompanying material for a talk at The Second Mind and Brain Symposium held at the Institute of Psychiatry, Denmark Hill, London on 20th October, 1990. Ian J. Thompson Physics Department, University of Surrey, Guildford GU2 5XH, UK October, 1990. ======================= The Mind-Brain Problem The problem of the relation between mind and body is well known as a difficult `world knot'. Over the centuries various monistic and dualistic theories have been proposed, and the subject has had renewed interest as we try to assimilate the implications of quantum physics. These implications may make us reexamine our views of brains and bodies, but it is still not clear what consequences they have for our understanding of minds. http

Quantum mechanics

Quantum Mechanics
www.myspace.com The Danish physicist Niels Bohr, who worked in Rutherford's lab, was the first to describe orbits of fixed size and energy in which electrons are free to travel without losing energy and falling toward the nucleus. According to this model, published in 1913, electrons can only occupy or jump between fixed energy levels and cannot reside in between these levels. In addition, once in their "ground state," electrons maintain the energy they contain. This energy keeps them in perpetual motion, allowing them to resist the attractive force of the nucleus.

Why quantum physics ends the free will debate

Why Quantum Physics Ends the Free Will Debate
period, end of story... not quite. READ BELOW! well, i didn't expect that my video would get that much attention, so i think i have to clarify my point of view: i don't know if free will exists and frankly, i don't care. what i know is, that newtonian determinism is bullshit (hence the video) and, that anyone who claims that free will doesn't exist is a fraud. at this point we simply don't know, the science isn't in yet. we have pretty good descriptions of the inner workings of 4% of the universe, and even those (QM and relativity) don't get along very well. (cheap shot, i know...). we don't know how consciousness works either. we can measure where things happen in the brain, but how and why we don't know. and then we have many-worlds theorists, solipsists, holographic universists, time-is-an-illusionists and so on. very nice concepts with little to no evidence. so please don't tell me that you know, because you don't. period, end of story ;-) here is a question for the "no-free-will atheists": does evolution even make sense in a deterministic universe? wouldn't you have to conclude, that, since everything is determined right from the big bang, that there is a plan (kind of) that lead to your existence? how does that differ from a "divine plan?" /discuss i'm an atheist, and i think, atheists should own the free-will argument. it's the religious people who will tell you, that god has an awesome plan for your life, who have prophecies and revelations. bad news for free will ...

2 of 2. Quantum Physics for Dummies
www.encognitive.com Water Experiment While the result was different from the bullets, there is still nothing unusual about it; everyone has seen this effect when the waves from two stones that are dropped into a lake in different places overlap. The difference between this experiment and the previous one is easily explained by saying that while the bullets each went through only one slit, the waves each went through both slits and were thus able to interfere with themselves. Now try the experiment with electrons. Recall that electrons are negatively charged particles that make up the outer layers of the atom. Certainly they could only go through one slit at a time, so their pattern should look like that of the bullets, right? Let's find out. (NOTE to actually perform this exact experiment would take detectors more advanced then any on earth at this time. However, the experiments have been done with neutron beams 9 and the results were the same as those presented here. A slightly different experiment was done to show that electrons would behave the same way 10. For reasons of familiarity, we speak of electrons here instead of neutrons.) Place an electron gun at the originating point and an electron detector in the detector place. First try opening only one slit, then just the other. The results are just like those of the bullets and the waves. Now open both slits. The result is just like the waves!11 Electron Experiment There must be some explanation. After all, an ...

Quantum physics | einstein and neils bohr

Quantum Physics | Einstein and Neils Bohr
The BohrEinstein debates is a popular name given to a series of public disputes between Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr about quantum physics. These two men, along with Max Planck were the founders of the original quantum theory. Their "debates" are remembered because of their importance to the philosophy of science. Einstein sought a physics that would tell him what was happening in the real world "behind" the equations. Bohr was interested in the equations themselves and did not worry about an underlying reality.

Quantum physics says goodbye to reality "hidden truth" -02*_ true light of life.com

www.truelightoflife.com --- http __ Quantum physics says goodbye to reality -- Some physicists are uncomfortable with the idea that all individual quantum events are innately random. This is why many have proposed more complete theories, which suggest that events are at least partially governed by extra "hidden variables". Now physicists from Austria claim to have performed an experiment that rules out a broad class of hidden-variables theories that focus on realism -- giving the uneasy consequence that reality does not exist when we are not observing it

Q - quantum physics (electron) (protons) (neutrons) more

Q - Quantum physics (Electron) (Protons) (Neutrons) More
Quantum mechanics (QM) is a set of scientific principles describing the known behavior of energy and matter that predominate at the atomic and subatomic scales. QM gets its name from the notion of a quantum, and that quantum value is the Planck constant. The waveparticle duality of energy and matter at the atomic scale provides a unified view of the behavior of particles such as photons and electrons. While the notion of the photon as a quantum of light energy is commonly understood as a particle of light that has an energy value governed by the Planck constant, what is quantized for an electron is the angular momentum it can have as it is bound in an atomic orbital. When not bound to an atom, an electron's energy is no longer quantized, but it displays, like any other massive particle, a Compton wavelength. While a photon does not have mass, it does have linear momentum. The full significance of the Planck constant is expressed in physics through the abstract mathematical notion of action

Buddhism and quantum physics -1

Buddhism and Quantum Physics -1
Jeffrey Grupp is a Buddhist philosopher, a political philosopher, and a lecturer at Purdue University Calumet and Purdue University Northcentral, both of which are in Northwest Indiana. He is the author of Corporatism (published by Progressive press, which is also Webster Tarpley's publisher) and The Telescreen {not yet published). He has published twelve articles in academic philosophy journals (Metaphysica, Indian International Journal of Buddhist Studies, Disputatio, among others), and he is a regular guest on the Nutrimedical Report, which is Dr. Bill Deagle's radio show. Grupp is the former associate editor of the prestigious academic philosophy journal, PHILO (editor: Quentin Smith). Grupp is the originator of the mereological nihilist interpretation of quantum mechanics (published in Axiomathes in 2006), and he has written about issues to do with domination by global corporations around the world. He has two web sites: www.abstractatom.com, and www.corporatism.us. Grupp has said on national radio that his political views are entirely absent from his university teaching and his political philosophy and academic teaching do not ever mix because universities would not consider his political positions real or credible information. Grupp's academic work in mainstream philosophy (specifically metaphysics, Buddhism, and quantum mechanics) has been claimed by Quentin Smith to be original and rigorous.

Quantum physics 1/4- made easy no more excuses =o

Quantum Physics 1/4- Made easy no more excuses =o
What is Quantum Physics? Quantum physics is a branch of science that deals with discrete, indivisible units of energy called quanta as described by the Quantum Theory. There are five main ideas represented in Quantum Theory: Energy is not continuous, but comes in small but discrete units. The elementary particles behave both like particles and like waves. The movement of these particles is inherently random. It is physically impossible to know both the position and the momentum of a particle at the same time. The more precisely one is known, the less precise the measurement of the other is The atomic world is nothing like the world we live in. While at a glance this may seem like just another strange theory, it contains many clues as to the fundamental nature of the universe and is more important then even relativity in the grand scheme of things (if any one thing at that level could be said to be more important then anything else). Furthermore, it describes the nature of the universe as being much different then the world we see. As Niels Bohr said, "Anyone who is not shocked by quantum theory has not understood it." Particle/Wave Duality Particle/wave duality is perhaps the easiest way to get aquatinted with quantum theory because it shows, in a few simple experiments, how different the atomic world is from our world. First let's set up a generic situation to avoid repetition. In the center of the experiment is a wall with two slits in it. To the right we have a ...

Quantum Entanglement --- In quantum mechanics, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle states that certain pairs of physical properties, like position and momentum, cannot both be known to arbitrary precision. That is, the more precisely one property is known, the less precisely the other can be known. This statement has been interpreted in two different ways. According to Heisenberg its meaning is that it is impossible to determine simultaneously both the position and velocity of an electron or any other particle with any great degree of accuracy or certainty. According to others (for instance Ballentine) this is not a statement about the limitations of a researcher's ability to measure particular quantities of a system, but it is a statement about the nature of the system itself as described by the equations of quantum mechanics. In quantum physics, a particle is described by a wave packet, which gives rise to this phenomenon. Consider the measurement of the absolute position of a particle. It could be anywhere the particle's wave packet has non ...
