TEXT: As a youth leader, in the 1970s I was late preparing a club talk one evening, so I made up a story about teddy-bear like extraterrestrials whose planet is rescued from ecological disaster. The tale was later written down as a childrens story called the Buffins of Twerpus. In 2009 the buffins have re-appeared in my novel, Empire of Peace in the middle of the human, 22nd Century Battle of Armageddon, at Granada, in Spain. Using only color and sound they disintegrate the humans weapons and create an empathy among the combatants that stops the battle in its tracks. In the heightened state of fear that followed, no political leader - even the imperious Harmony Grace was willing to waste resources on a war with other humans. He and all humanity reasoned with unquestioned conviction that the intended extermination of everything human by the evil aliens was likely to be initiated at any moment. In terror, the world went on a preparatory war footing. Even nuclear weaponry was resurrected for a first strike scenario against the aliens home world, when it was found. The search thus sparked gave space exploration the shot in the arm it needed to chart the solar system and visit planets beyond. DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Angel and the Badman is a 1947 black-and-white Western film, starring John Wayne, Gail Russell, Harry Carey and Bruce Cabot which examines the ability of a shootist to renounce violence. This film, which was the first one Wayne produced as well as starred in, was a radical departure for this genre at the time it was released. The film was directed by Wayne's frequent screenwriter James Edward Grant. The notorious shootist and womanizer Quirt Evans' (John Wayne) horse collapses as he passes a Quaker family's home. Quirt has been wounded and the kindly family takes him in and nurses him back to health against the advice of others. The handsome Evans quickly attracts the affections of their beautiful but sheltered daughter, Penelope (Gail Russell). He develops an affection for the family but his troubled past follows him there, both outlaws and the law. Evans falls for Penelope and begins to assimilate her pacifist lifestyle. However, the tug of his old ways is very strong and so he vacillates back and forth. He is finally forced to examine his character after his violent actions bring harm to an innocent person. This movie is the point of departure for two other successful "fish out of water" movies, the 1985 Witness starring Harrison Ford and the 2003 The Outsider starring Tim Daly and Naomi Watts, both of which have a similar story line.
