Lftr vs nuclear waste - plutonium, americium, curium (transuranics) can be fissioned / disposed

LFTR vs Nuclear Waste - Plutonium, americium, curium (transuranics) can be fissioned / disposed
Sign the petition! ThoriumPetition.com - LFTR does not produce transuranic waste. It burns up essentially all of the fuel because we don't remove fuel from the reactor until it's a fission product. It is these transuranics like plutonium, americium & curium which present the biggest challenge to nuclear waste disposal. They have moderate half-lives (neither decay quickly nor low levels of radiation) and have complicated decay chains. All of today's pressurized water reactors (every commercial reactor operating in North America) use less than 1% of the energy stored in the nuclear fuel. This is why the spent fuel rods are difficult to manage. LFTR can consume almost all of its fuel. This big increase in efficiency means less nuclear waste to deal with. And because LFTR (Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor) uses LIQUID fuel, it is far easier to partition the "waste" to extract valuable by-products, such as medical isotopes for cancer treatment.

Radioactive waste disposal, high level 1980

Radioactive Waste Disposal, High Level 1980
Highly radioactive wastes are dangerous and deadly wherever they are, whether stored at reactor sites (indoors in pools or outdoors in dry casks); transported on the roads, rails, or waterways; or dumped on Native American lands out West. Highly radioactive wastes include solid irradiated nuclear fuel assemblies (called spent or used by the industry that creates them) and liquid high-level radioactive wastes resulting from the reprocessing (extraction of fissile plutonium and uranium) of solid irradiated fuel rods. The vast majority of highly radioactive wastes generated in the US come from commercial nuclear power reactors. Irradiated nuclear fuel rods discharged from commercial nuclear power plants are highly radioactive, a million times more so than when they were first loaded into a reactor core as fresh fuel. If unshielded, irradiated nuclear fuel just removed from a reactor core could deliver a lethal dose of radiation to a person standing three feet away in just seconds. Even after decades of radioactive decay, a few minutes unshielded exposure could deliver a lethal dose. Certain radioactive elements (such as plutonium-239) in spent fuel will remain hazardous to humans and other living beings for hundreds of thousands of years. Other radioisotopes will remain hazardous for millions of years. Thus, these wastes must be shielded for centuries and isolated from the living environment for hundreds of millenia. For more on the problems of this waste disposal, go to the ...

Managing nuclear waste: the illogic of reprocessing

Managing Nuclear Waste: The Illogic of Reprocessing
Frank von Hippel, Professor of Public and International Affairs, Woodrow Wilson School, Princeton University. Description: Dr. Frank von Hippel discussed the pros and cons of the proposed US Department of Energy plan to process nuclear waste to separate and reuse plutonium. He explained that reprocessing, in addition to costing two to ten times more than on-site storage, creates a security risk. Reprocessed plutonium is compact and transportable, making it vulnerable to theft by terrorists or potentially even non-nuclear states looking to develop nuclear weapons programs. Therefore, Dr. von Hippel argued, the United States should not alter its policy of the previous three decades of opposing nuclear reprocessing until better safety standards are in place.

Stephanie Cooke Describes How Uranium Fission Fuel Cycle Produces Plutonium
It is not widely known that the reason Uranium fission is the predominant nuclear power plant design of choice is due to the fact that Plutonium is the by-product of the fuel cycle. When nuclear waste is re-processed Plutonium can be extracted to make nuclear bombs. Stephanie Cooke goes over the details in this Thom Hartman interview on his "Conversations with Great Minds" program from 3/9/2012

Nuclear event uk - plutonium leak 5 times legal safety limit - sellafield nuclear complex cumbria

NUCLEAR EVENT UK - Plutonium Leak 5 Times Legal Safety Limit - Sellafield Nuclear Complex Cumbria
www.guardian.co.uk - This Event is no longer on rsoe. This is taken from my email alert - Lucky I kept it.. Description: There have been two spillages of radioactive waste and a breakdown in an emergency cooling system at Britain's nuclear plants in the past three months, according to a report to ministers leaked to the Guardian. A brown puddle containing plutonium five times the legal safety limit leaked from an old ventilation duct at the Sellafield nuclear complex in Cumbria. This exposed "a number of shortfalls in the design", says the report. Groundwater at the Torness nuclear power station near Edinburgh was contaminated with radioactive tritium (a form of hydrogen) leaking from two pipelines. At Hartlepool nuclear station on the north-east coast of England, the back-up cooling system was put out of action by a faulty valve. All three incidents occurred in February this year and are still under investigation by the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR), the government's newly created nuclear safety watchdog. They were sufficiently serious to be reported to ministers under safety guidelines agreed in the wake of the Chernobyl accident in Ukraine 25 years ago. Disclosure of the incidents could further delay the government's plans for a new programme of nuclear power stations, already being held up by a safety review prompted by the Fukushima accident in Japan. Critics will press for the incidents to be included in the review, being led by the executive head of the ONR ...

Activist group warns los alamos wildfire 3 1/2 miles from dumpsite with plutonium-contaminated waste

Activist group warns Los Alamos wildfire 3 1/2 miles from dumpsite with plutonium-contaminated waste
Date: 6/27/2011 A serious New Mexico wildfire 78 square miles in size has forced a mandatory evacuation of the town of Los Alamos, which is where Los Alamos National Laboratory is located.[1] This laboratory is one of the three sites where the secret Manhattan Project was conducted resulting in the development of the world's first atomic bomb, as well as the hydrogen bomb. At the time, the responsibility of Los Alamos National Laboratory was weapons research and design. According to the AP an activist group called Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety warned that the wildfire is 3.5 miles away from 30000 55-gallon drums of plutonium-contaminated waste stored on the grounds of the Los Alamos National Laboratory: ... The anti-nuclear watchdog group Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety, however, said the fire appeared to be about 3 1/2 miles from a dumpsite where as many as 30000 55-gallon drums of plutonium-contaminated waste were stored in fabric tents above ground. The group said the drums were awaiting transport to a low-level radiation dump site in southern New Mexico.[1] ... The media contact for Los Alamos National Lab when asked refused to confirm the statement by Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety: ... Lab spokesman Steve Sandoval declined to confirm that there were any such drums currently on the property. He acknowledged that low-level waste is at times put in drums and regularly taken from the lab to the Waste Isolation Pilot Project site in Carlsbad.[1 ...

Integral fast reactor introduction

Integral Fast Reactor Introduction
This video was originally uploaded by Steve Kirsch here: ifr.blip.tv I have re-uploaded the video here for a wider audience. Full credit to him for discovering this video and placing it on the internet. Describes the features and benefits of the Integral Fast Reactor. Major features are it uses existing nuclear waste for fuel and it generates no long-term radioactive waste; it is all recycled within the facility. This video was made in the early 1990s, although everything is still relevant the same today as we face the same if not greater energy issues. The IFR was canceled in 1994 for political reasons despite having the ability to solve all the current real and perceived problems with nuclear energy. For more discussion please visit: skirsch.com bravenewclimate.com We should build the IFR along with other sources of clean abundant power for a sustainable, ecologically friendly future.

Plutonium rag by stephen jay goodman

Plutonium Rag by Stephen Jay Goodman
© 1980 & 2011 by Stephen Jay Goodman I wrote this song over 30 years ago, inspired by a speech given by Dr. Helen Caldicott who co-founded the Physicians for Social Responsibility. Considering that Plutonium is dangerously radioactive for 500000 years, a 30-year wait to get this educational song out to the public in a global way isn't the end of the world...not yet, anyway. After the latest nuclear power plant disaster at Fukushima I just couldn't wait any more. My heart goes out to all the people in Japan who have been affected by this disaster. First Three Mile Island, then Chernobyl and now Fukushima---I sincerely hope that the world will take the steps necessary to prevent any more of these disasters. Spread the word, educate yourself, speak out! Thanks for watching. Steve Goodman. Helen caldicott on plutonium

Helen Caldicott on Plutonium
Helen Caldicott (born 1938) is an Australian physician, author, and anti-nuclear advocate who has founded several associations dedicated to opposing the use of depleted uranium munitions, nuclear weapons, nuclear weapons proliferation, war and military action in general. She hosts a weekly radio program, If You Love This Planet. In 1980, following the Three Mile Island nuclear accident, she left her medical career in order to concentrate on calling the world's attention to what she refers to as the "insanity" of the nuclear arms race and the growing reliance on nuclear power. In 1982, she was the subject of the controversial Oscar-winning National Film Board of Canada documentary on the dangers of nuclear weapons, entitled If You Love This Planet. Citing confidential memos, Caldicott says that the Hershey Foods Corporation was concerned about radiation levels in milk used in their products because of the proximity of the Three Mile Island accident to Hershey's Pennsylvania factory. According to Caldicott, citing a March 30, 1979 study by the Pennsylvania State University, College of Engineering, radiation contaminants that fell on the Pennsylvania grass found its way into the milk of the local dairy cows. Caldicott noted this was contrary to the findings in the government official report released shortly after the Three Mile Island disaster. Caldicott disputes this report in her book, Nuclear Power is Not the Answer. Also in 1980, she founded the Women's Action for ...

Sandy mush nc - no! to nuclear waste dump!

Sandy Mush NC - NO! to nuclear waste dump!
Now that Yucca Mountain is considered unsafe for the nation's high-level nuclear waste, the "Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future" is considering, among other granite sites, the pristine farmland of the mountains of North Carolina, where pure water and safe food are produced in one of the world's most beautiful places. Please email BRC@nuclear.energy.gov and insist that they not choose Sandy Mush as the substitute for Yucca Mountain, and for that matter that they not transport nuclear waste across the nation's highways, mountains, rivers, creeks and streams, but instead keep it where it has been produced until a truly safe and permanent solution has been found. The money would be much better spent ensuring the onsite security of the radioactive waste produced by nuclear power plants (including weapons-grade plutonium and uranium). Transportation through the still-unpolluted mountains is a criminal risk. See the comments made at the Asheville, NC SE Energy and Environment Expo (8/2010) at www.youtube.com

Hanford, Nuclear Waste Cleanup: Vacuuming Radioactive Sludge
This is what nuclear waste cleanup looks like to an operator vacuuming up radioactive sludge from basins that held spent nuclear fuel at the Hanford Site. The operator --standing on metal grating about 20 feet above the water in the basin -- must use a camera to guide the vacuum nozzle because any movement stirs up the sludge and clouds the water.

Hanford and the environment

Hanford and the Environment
Hanford Site, 1943 Hanford, Washington The Hanford Site was established for the purpose of transforming uranium into weapons-grade plutonium. The site operated from 1943 to 1990, the years of the Manhattan Project and the Cold War. Officials selected the location because it was isolated and because it was near the Columbia River, which would provide water with which to cool the reactors. Residents of Hanford and other nearby towns were forcibly relocated so construction on the site could begin. The site was enormous, originally covering some 670 square miles. During its period of operation the Hanford Site produced some 64 metric tons of plutonium, including the material used to make the bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. The project created massive amounts of discharge and waste materials. At times irradiated water was released into the Columbia River, some of which reached the Pacific Ocean. Gaseous wastes were released into the atmosphere via smokestacks. Today the site includes some 2100 metric tons of spent nuclear fuel and 53 million gallons of liquid radioactive waste. There are more than 1700 waste sites and 500 contaminated facilities at Hanford. In 1989 the Department of Energy agreed to begin the cleanup site, with the goal of reducing the site footprint to 75 square miles. US Atomic Energy Commission & General Electric Company

Energy from thorium: a nuclear waste burning liquid salt thorium reactor

Energy From Thorium: A Nuclear Waste Burning Liquid Salt Thorium Reactor
Kirk Sorensen's Tech Talk, delivered at Google on July 20, 2009. Successfully developing a liquid-fluoride thorium reactor (LFTR) would essentially solve our planets energy problems for thousands of years, because it would allow us to fully utilize the energy in natural thorium, which makes up 0.0012% of the Earths crust. Most of the research and development work for this technology was done by Oak Ridge National Labs back in the 50s and 60s. They were working to a different set of overall objectives, nevertheless, there are many lessons to be gleaned from their work that can help us to avoid pitfalls and develop LFTR into a high-performance, high-reliability power supply.

Is nuclear waste really waste?

Is Nuclear Waste Really Waste?
Google Tech Talk December 6, 2010 Presented by Kirk Sorensen ABSTRACT An economic analysis of what is in spent nuclear fuel. As a nuclear reactor fissions heavy metal U235 and Pu239, the atoms are split into two randomly sized pieces. Many of these fission products are unstable and rapidly decay into other products. After nuclear reactor fuel has cooled in a pool of water for a few years, and then sat in dry cask storage for another 10--30 years, what is it made of? Is it dangerous waste that needs to be isolated from humanity for 100000 years or is it precious material waiting to be partitioned and sold? The answer may surprise you. Speaker Info: Kirk Sorensen is chief nuclear technologist at Teledyne Brown Engineering in Huntsville, Alabama. He has been researching the nuclear fuel cycle for many years in connection with a strong interest in thorium as a planetary energy source. He is also a PhD student in nuclear engineering at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville under Dr. Laurence Miller. He runs a blog called "energyfromthorium.com" and is active in the Thorium Energy Alliance (TEA) and the International Thorium Energy Organization (IThEO) and is also a member of the American Nuclear Society (ANS)

Meltdown and plutonium at fukushima

Meltdown and Plutonium at Fukushima
All About MOX "commercial" www.youtube.com In 1999, the Nuclear Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) signed a contract with a consortium, now called Shaw AREVA MOX Services, LLC to design, build, and operate a Mixed Oxide (MOX) Fuel Fabrication Facility. This facility will be a major component in the United States program to dispose of surplus weapon-grade plutonium. The facility will take surplus weapon-grade plutonium, remove impurities, and mix it with uranium oxide to form MOX fuel pellets for reactor fuel assemblies. These assemblies will be irradiated in commercial nuclear power reactors. the spent fuel standard www.sott.net here's the link for this article. Reactor makers draft 10-year decommission plan Japanese manufacturer Toshiba, which helped build the Fukushima Daiichi plant's now crippled nuclear reactors, says decommissioning them will take at least 10 years. Toshiba has drafted a plan with 4 US companies in the nuclear power industry to decommission the plant, including the Number 2 and 3 reactors that it built. The company's President Norio Sasaki said on Thursday that it has submitted the proposal to Tokyo Electric Power and the Industry Ministry. Prime Minister Naoto Kan had earlier asked the utility to come ...

Huge plutonium leakage land & sea - japan fukushima nuclear reactor meltdown

HUGE PLUTONIUM LEAKAGE LAND & SEA - Japan Fukushima Nuclear Reactor Meltdown
***** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO YT channel FAIREWINDSENERGY ***** Deadly plutonium is leaking uncontrollably from the Fukushima. Tests show that both the land and seawater around the reactor are contaminated, with no projected end in sight. Based on the readings and observation of damage, fuel rods may have experienced a 70-80% meltdown. Diagram of Fukushima Projected Radioactive Leak Path at: fairewinds.com Read how are high levels of radioactive water might be getting out of the Fukushima 1, 2, and 3 Containment Buildings. Fairewinds believes that even if the nuclear reactors have not melted down, radioactively contaminated water is leaking out of the reactors and containment buildings. Boiling Water Reactors (BWR's), like Fukushima, have dozens of holes in the bottom of the nuclear reactor because BWR control rods enter the reactor from the bottom, unlike Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR's) where the control rods enter from the top. * US experts: significant water contamination in Japan * Nuclear and environmental scientists in the United States darkened their assessment of the risks markedly on Monday after operators at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant said that highly radioactive water has entered underground concrete tunnels extending beyond the reactor. Sea water and fresh water used to cool the reactors, critically damaged by Japan's March 11 earthquake and tsunami, and spent fuel pools at the plant have been put in storage tanks there. But reports indicate these tanks ...

Wastwater to nuclear waste.mov

Wastwater to Nuclear Waste.mov
In 2009 Radiation Free Lakeland organised a sponsored walk around Wastwater. 4 millions gallons of fresh water are abstracted every day from Wastwater to flush over the radioactive wastes at Sellafield. The British Government wants to make even more high level wastes with the plan for a new MOX plant and new build next to Sellafield - they describe it as 'recycling' the plutonium. Only 1 percent is 'recycled' the rest becomes even hotter wastes. The UK's premier freshwater resource of The Lakes are becoming depleted through cooling the heels of the nuclear industry so the Environment Agency have suggested a desalination plant to accommodate the nuclear ambitions of this govnt - desalination requires huge amounts of energy.. In 2009 the walkers raised around £200 which was given to the Chernobyl Children's Project UK. Another walk is planned for Spring 2012

Fukushima: Japan's venting radiation high into atmosphere and burning nuclear waste; Arnie Gundersen
Go to Fairewinds Associates' website below for Arnie Gundersen's assessment of the problem of meltthrough as well as other problems and their effects on the United States (update of 8/21/2011): www.fairewinds.com (sorry, for some reason I can't respond to comments, so, this video is available on www.fairewinds.com, it's dated 8/21/2011. You can also subscribe there to get updates from Arnie Gundersen as soon as they become available. Arnie and Maggie Gundersen also have a youtube channel fairewindsenergy, but they don't always keep it current. fairewinds.com is the best source. Hope it helps.) Here are links to the documents discussed in the video "Evidence of neutron leakage at the Fukushima nuclear plant from measurements of radioactive 35S in California:" www.docstoc.com and US NRC / "Briefing on the Task Force Review of NRC Processes and Regulations Following the Events in Japan" www.docstoc.com Points to note: First, the tents that are about to be built around the crippled nuclear reactors are not to help us or the world. Their purpose is to allow the radiation to accumulate, after which time the radiation will be vented up the stacks into the higher levels of atmosphere, which, in turn, will improve its flow towards us (the US) and around the northern hemisphere. Second, the Japanese government allowed burning of materials that are so radiactive that they would be considered nuclear waste in this country, which, of course, is improving the radiation flow towards the ...

Major features of the IFR are it uses existing nuclear waste for fuel and it generates no long-term radioactive waste; it is all recycled within the facility. This video was made in the early 1990s, although everything is still relevant the same today as we face the same if not greater energy issues. The IFR was canceled in 1994 for political reasons despite having the ability to solve all the current real and perceived problems with nuclear energy.
