I am chronicling different Occupy groups across the country and creating a journal for each group I visit, as with the completed volume for Occupy Los Angeles -see the work at - www.magcloud.com . FUNDING The Occupy Portraits - Los Angeles was fully financed from my now empty bank account, especially after having just purchased 5 airline tickets today to go across the country to make portraits of activists within the movement spanning five states, including Occupy: Portland, Olympia, Seattle, New York (Wall Street), New Haven, Oakland, and Venice. For the last 3 months I have financed 100% of this project out of my own pocket because I felt inspired to archive the journey of a group of people deeply committed to creating a more just world. Using my antique medium format Rolleiflex film camera, on average I used 4-6 rolls of film a day at Occupy LA at $60 per roll, making for a costly and busy winter. On the 2nd day of OccupyLA, there seems to have been as split in the group on weather or not Cops are part of the 99%. Some of the group says that because they live off a paycheck like the rest of us, they are in the 99%. Others say that as a officer in uniform, they represent the security of the corporate funded government. This group was formed for the purpose of bringing the discussion to the General Assembly, to get the entire groups support either for or against the LAPD, regardless of how they have treated the protest so far.
