On June 24, My Morning Jacket descended on Oakland's historic Fox Theater for an epic performance in support of their majestic album, Circuital. Remedy Editorial's Scott Compton and his merry band of video documentarians made the scene on behalf of Boing Boing. You'll remember Scott and crew as the artistes who brought The Swell Season and The Decemberists to the big little screen for Boing Boing Video. We are now honored to feature their loving cut of My Morning Jacket, interviewed and live in concert on June 24, 2011. Here's Scott: About our time with the band: We spent about 45 minutes interviewing the band. This is one of those happy stories where you meet your heroes and they are even cooler than you had hoped. Since I'm getting ready to move to Oregon—Hello, Eugene!—I figured I ought to get up there and check out one of the last family-owned music gear companies in America. Turns out that EHX also manufacturers a huge percentage of the world's vacuum tubes in its factory in Russia, which are then sent back to New York for testing and pairing before being sold to vintage and high-end audio fans, as well as manufacturers like McIntosh. I had a really good time checking out the factory floor to see the hand-made vacuum tube testing machines, as well as talking to the engineers that sit around all day and try to figure out how to get the ideas for new FX processors out of their crazy boss's head and into working hardware. Star simpson's first interview on boston airport led terror scare

BBtv: tv.boingboing.net. In today's episode of Boing Boing tv One year ago, a 19-year-old MIT engineering student named Star Simpson got dressed to go pick up a friend at Boston's Logan airport. She pulled a hoodie out of her closet, a wearable tech design she'd made with a light-up LED-circuit on the chest. In her hand was a small pink rose she'd crafted from hardened clay, a gift for her friend. A few hours later at the airport, after an airport employee mistook her sweatshirt for a bomb and the rose for an explosive implement, Star found herself surrounded by 40 armed police who believed she was a suicide bomber. She was arrested for "possessing a hoax device," and an unprecedented media frenzy ensued. Here was the Boing Boing post from that day. A year later, after a long series of court dates, a Boston judge ruled that Star must perform community service and make a public apology. Star says she intended no harm. She believes the authorities were unfairly harsh with her long after it was obvious she posed no threat, and that legal proceedings were unduly influenced by a prevailing atmosphere of anxiety over terrorism (this just months after a similar case in Boston). She has since dropped out of MIT, and says the school's reaction felt like "being disowned." She moved out of Boston in part because of recurring threats and attacks from strangers. Iphone 4: how does it perform for video recording? let's bike to the skate park...

BoingBoing.net's Xeni Jardin takes the iPhone 4 out for a Venice Beach bike ride, to test the smartphone's new high-resolution video recording capabilities. 100% of video footage in this video was shot with iPhone 4. For some portions (while riding bike), the iPhone was strapped on to Xeni's hand with rubber bands (The Rubber Band Steadicam), and the iPhone camera was facing one direction with medium-res video recording. In other sections of this video (skaters skating, orchids, ocean, and interview with skater Kiko, age 8) the iPhone camera was activated in the other direction and captured high-resolution video. You can see the difference, but both outperformed other smartphones and handheld ultra-mobile digital video camcorders. When it comes to video recording, iPhone 4 is the one to beat. You have to be mindful of that camera orientation switch option noted above with FaceTime: when you shoot video out of one side of the device, you get lower-resolution 640 x 480 footage, and when you shoot out of the other side, you get far higher-res 1280 x 720. As with the still camera function, you can tap an area to focus in, even while you are shooting. Video is saved and exported as h.264 QuickTime, and you can email, MMS, or publish to YouTube right from the iPhone. File sizes for the raw footage we used to edit together this video were surprisingly small, too. Mr. tom hardy | stuart: a life backwards {boing boing woosh!}

Hi, yeah not a video. Sorry. Just a little update to tell you what I'm working on. I'm currently uber obsessed with Tom Hardy. As in, I want to have his children obsessed. He's about the neatest thing since sliced bread to me. For those of you who don't quite recognize the name, he's the man who stole every scene in Inception as Mr. Eames. He's a brilliant actor and a gorgeous man. I highly recommend the movie of which I've taken this clip. It's called Stuart: A Life Backwards. It's about a writer (played by Benedict Cumberbatch, also brilliant) who befriends a homeless man (Hardy) and decides to write a book about him, backwards as per Stuart's demand. It's based on a true story and is a wonderful little film that made me laugh and cry multiple times. To be warned, it is one of THard's full frontal movies, so if that bothers you, well just skip that scene. Other Tommy films I recommend (err, everything he's been in really): -his portrayal of Bill Sykes in the 2008 BBC miniseries of Oliver Twist is crazy good. -his part in Scenes of a Sexual Nature had me rolling on the floor with laughter. One of his only funny roles, which is a shame. -I don't even like Wuthering Heights, but he's brilliant in the 2009 BBC miniseries version. -Bronson. I have no words for how amazing this film is. So yeah, I'm obsessed with Thard and Inception at the moment. Definitely working on a few Eames and Eames/Arthur vids. I also started writing out a plan for an Inception fanfic, so there's ... Unexpected (2d animated short film)

While playing fetch with his little dog, a poor old man receives an unexpected surprise which changes his life forever. I made this animation for my 2nd year BA (Hons) Animation in University for the Creative of Arts, Farnham. Although it doesn't mentioned in this cartoon, the story took place around a fictional park in Cockfoster, UK, Oct 1965. The background scenes of this animation are inspired by the 1950s cartoon concept designs with strange and peculiar looking trees, hills and surroundings; it is also known as retro style. This inspiration is especially from UPA, Hanna-Barbara and Disney cartoons from the 1950s and 60s such as: Donald Duck shorts, Gerald McBoing Boing, Mr Magoo and Sleeping Beauty. This 2D drawn animation was done in Macromedia Flash and After Effects. Originally, this film was to be made in stop-motion, but because of the time-consuming method which can cause me delay handing my work to my tutor, I swapped to drawn-on-Flash animation. The pumpkin of nyefar

"The Pumpkin Of Nyefar" is a hand animated short film I wrote with Maurice Noble (Duck Dodgers in the 24½th Century and What's Opera, Doc?) in Turkey, and co-directed with Mark Oftedal (Toy story, A Bugs Life) at the "Wang film studios" in Taiwan, and Bangkok in our spare time. The film is narrated by the ever charming June Foray (Witch Hazel, Rocky the squirrel). Designer Jules Engel (Disney, UPA, Gerald McBoing Boing, Madeline, and Mr. Magoo ) helped on the film as a design consultant. Animator/ designer Sue Kroyer shook things up with a few of her famous "Sexy girl" designs for the harem... and Lawrence Marvit (A Bugs Life, Monsters Inc.) did some great inspirational background sketches to kick things off. The other day, some info on the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, or ACTA, Leaked out to the internet. To summarize things: its bad. The recent Canadian copyright consultations had the public speak out, and express their opinions on copyright law, and from the responses I came across, the public was strongly opposed to strengthening these laws. many people even expressed a strong desire to loosen up these laws, abolish crown copyright, and expand fair dealing laws, (or, "fair use", for those more familiar with the American terminology.) With clear exemptions made for education, research, parody, and format shifting. The people have spoken, and with the current political climate in Canada, the minority Conservative government's hands are tied, but then these sneaky little things called "International Trade Agreements" come along, and bypass the democratic process of my country, and push laws onto people who have recently made it very clear that they do not want these laws. These companies have failed to adapt to a changing market place. Rather than having their business adapt to meet the desires of their customers, they are having the laws changed to enforce their business models on to the customers. In Luzon they may go by the name of arnis, arnis de mano, sinawali, pagkalikali, panandata (usage of weapons), didya, kabaroan (blade usage) and kaliradman. In the Visayas and Mindanao, these martial arts have been referred to as eskrima, kali and kalirongan Lars Lömke . Kutaw and Silat are separate martial arts that have been practiced in the islands. When the Spaniards began colonizing the Philippines, they saw an already-developed weapons-based martial arts practiced by the natives. The name eskrima came from the Spanish word for "fencing" (ie, any form of hand-to-hand combat with bladed weapons). After the decree prohibiting the native to carry full-sized swords (such as the Kris and the Kamplian), the Maharlika (the ancient nobility class) preserved the art. To circumvent the decree, some practitioners used sticks made out of rattan rather than swords, as well as small knives wielded like a sword.
