NHTSA's proposal calls for the fleet of cars and light trucks to average 31.6 miles per gallon by model year 2015 - but when calculating these standards, NHTSA used Energy Information Administration (EIA) assumptions about gas prices that defy reality, ranging from .42/gallon in 2016 to .51/gallon in 2030. The administration concedes that gas prices are the most critical element in determining mile per gallon increases in America's vehicle fleet. Lf02 economic collapse: our unsustainable system vs the peak oil & decline

Our global economic system is dependent on a growing energy, and most importantly, oil supply. Without growth in energy, the money supply can not grow (for long), which leads to a situation where the money supply stops growing, leading to economic recession. When the USA hit its peak oil production in 1970, there were a series of economic impacts, including recession, abandoning the gold standand, high unemployment, and high inflation. Global peak oil extraction appears to have happened in the 2005-2008 time frame, and had a large contributing effect on stressing the global economic system to the verge of collapse. The run up in gas gasoline prices during that same era impacted the economic system severely. The US Government and many others have examined the global peak oil issue and have come to the sobering conclusion that severe economic impacts are inevitable, and we are unprepared. Future oil prices may be driven up by the stagnant or declining supply, and then collapsing down as economic dislocation occurs. The economy added 103000 jobs last month, up from a revised total of 71000 in November, according to the Labor Department. But most analysts were expecting the economy to add about 175000 jobs. The economy needs to generate about 125000 jobs a month just to keep up with population growth and prevent the unemployment rate from rising. More than double that amount is needed to reduce the rate. Most of the new jobs -- 103000 -- came from the private sector while the government shed 10000. The drop in the unemployment rate was partly influenced by the fact that the government no longer counts people as unemployed when they stop looking for work. Through all of 2010, the nation added 1.1 million jobs, or an average of 94000 jobs a month. The economy still has a long way to go before it can fully recover from the 7 million jobs lost during the recession. Krauthammer: obama's green algae vision to replace oil

Obama's Energy Secretary Steven Chu is on the record as having said we need higher gas prices like those in Europe. A new congressional report has determined that the Obama administration is intentionally causing high gas prices. Obama seems to be doing everything he can to increase gas prices, inhibit domestic oil drilling and ruin the coal industry. His green energy policies cause consumers to pay as much as 38% more for electricity. Obama used Spain's green initiative as a blueprint for how the United States should use federal funds to stimulate the economy. Obama's economic stimulus package allocated billions of dollars to the green jobs industry. Much of that has been wasted as Solyndra and and several other "green" companies have filed bankruptcy. Spain's unemployment reached 22.8% which is the highest in 17 years. The "green" jobs myth helped cause the problem. A study released in January of 2010 showed that every "green job" created with government money in Spain over the previous eight years came at the cost of 2.2 regular jobs, and only one in 10 of the newly created green jobs became a permanent job. The study draws parallels with the green jobs programs of the Obama administration.
