Gulf oil "spill"--everything old is new again

Gulf Oil
From the great Rachel Maddow. With respect to off-shore drilling, we have learned nothing in over 3 decades except how to drill in deeper water and, as a result, make spills more difficult to stop. Amazing!

The gulf oil spill and our historic solidarity - stand in the sand, santa barbara

the Gulf Oil Spill and our Historic Solidarity - Stand in the Sand, Santa Barbara
This last wednesday I went to a BBQ/meeting for the upcoming event at WestBeach, STAND IN THE SAND. People were brainstorming ideas, painting posters, and developing an impromptu advertising agenda. So I decided to throw together a short video to help promote this event. The Message: We Stand in the Sand united with the people and communities devastated by the tragic Gulf Coast disaster. We offer our solidarity and resources to assist in the long recovery effort. The images of the present catastrophe stir painful memories of our own spill 40 years ago, confirming that future oil spills are inevitable: this will happen again unless we change. The modern environmental movement was sparked by the anger and commitment borne of the Santa Barbara oil spill. A renewed, expanded movement to unite communities rural and urban, coastal and inland, left and right, to promote a clean, renewable energy future must be the legacy of the Gulf Spill Disaster. This tragedy is being felt throughout our communities -- be they fishing, industry, tourism, and beyond -- and our response must be equally broad. Our Call to Action: -Contribute and commit to the restoration of the Gulf with our hearts, hands, minds, and financial resources. -Recommit to reducing our personal support of the fossil fuel economy and the by-products it creates. 'The personal matters.' -Promote concrete policy changes that usher in a new era of renewable energy source use.

The gulf spill: one year later - 4.17.2011

The Gulf Spill: One Year Later - 4.17.2011
THE SPILL'S ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: LOUISIANA OYSTERMEN: Oysters were once a prime harvest from the Gulf of Mexico. Before the 2010 oil spill, 67 percent of the oysters Americans ate were grown and harvested there. But the oil and efforts to contain it shut down much of the region's seafood production, and many Louisiana oyster beds were killed by fresh water diverted from the Mississippi River to push oil away from shore. INTERVIEW WITH HARRY SHEARER: Shearer, the voice of several characters on The Simpsons is an environmental advocate, "investigative satirist," and part-time resident of New Orleans. He recently directed a documentary about Hurricane Katrina as a manmade disaster, titled "The Big Uneasy." He discusses how the Gulf region is recovering from the spill and how he believes the government and industry should renew their focus on drilling safety. THE SPILL'S ECONOMIC IMPACT: STAYING IN BUSINESS: The 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill and the ensuing drilling moratorium dealt a blow to the oil industry, but they've been devastating to family businesses that supply the industry. No drilling means no business at all, forcing people from their jobs and families to make heartbreaking decisions. Correspondent Lee Patrick Sullivan visits Thomas and Melissa Clements, owners of a machine shop that has practically ground to a halt since drilling stopped. When will it pick up again? And will they be around to see that day? INTERVIEW WITH SEN. DAVID VITTER: Vitter (R-LA) has ...

Reid: Renewable Energy Is Key To Our National Security
Today BP will try to choke off the oil gusher at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico by force-feeding it heavy drilling mud and cement. Senator Harry Reid admitted "waiting with bated breath" to hear the results of this attempt to stop the leak that started more than a month ago. But Reid also acknowledged the opportunity that this terrible disaster has presented the country: "This is an opportunity for us to move away from fossil fuel, to do a better job of looking at this renewable energies that are available to us all over this country -- sun, wind geothermal."

Going To Louisiana- Sending Renewable Energy and Hope For a Better Day
This is an artistic response to the BP Gulf of Mexico oil disaster. We teach our students to express themselves and advocate for what they believe in. Over 100 children studied the BP oil disaster and its effects on our environment. They rendered what they want to see in the sea- clean water for all living things, This mural served as a backdrop for our school bake sale with proceeds supporting the National Audubon Society's pelican restoration advocacy..This beautiful watercolor mural was sent to LEAN- Louisiana Environmental Action Network - for the people of Louisiana. The children showed that one person can make a difference, but joined by many, can make a bigger impact. Here is their completed mural.

Hole in the Bottom of the Sea
Inspired by the 2010 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill, celebrated singer/songwriter Christine Lavin has created a simple yet powerful message that will have children feeling for the plight of wildlife. Award-winning Illustrator Betsy Franco Feeney has once again teamed up with Ms. Lavin to make a beautiful picturebook that will "tug at young readers' heartstrings...If the fate of the planet is in children's hands, reading them books like this one might be a wise idea." Energy expert robert bryce questions green future

Energy Expert Robert Bryce questions Green future
The oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico has intensified the effort to move away from petroleum and other fossil fuels in favor of clean renewable sources of energy -- to power the electric grid as well as transportation. Even major oil companies now tout wind turbines and solar arrays as part of their "green energy" initiatives. But one energy expert, Robert Bryce, argues that the clean energy needed for the near term future will not come from the wind or sun. VOA's Greg Flakus visited Bryce at his home in Austin, Texas and filed this report.

Oil spill harmful to bp stocks! who would have guessed?

Oil Spill harmful to BP Stocks! Who would have guessed?
BP is very, very concerned about the oil-spill in the Gulf. After circumventing governmental regulations, and paying off the regulators, in order to save $ 8 million bucks for this particular drilling project in the short run, they are now facing billions of losses, a 13% drop in their stock price.and YES, they are very concerned. You betcha! So, as the article stated: no, not even the oil industry's most fervent apologists, is making light of this accident. Except, that this accident would have been entirely preventable, had it not been for short-term profit concerns in the first place. This is an industry, which has resisted alternative and renewable energy for DECADES, because its just too profitable for the time being, and other infra-structure investments may cut into their profits instead of making long-term investments far into the future. They do not care about the planet or its inhabitants long-term, all that matters are their stock portfolios on Wall Street. Is BP another company TOO BIG to fail? Why do you think, that the people of Greece are so pissed off? Or do you think these people are taking to the streets, supporting a General Strike just for the hell of it? Decades of progress for ordinary people are being taken away from them, because the elites lined their own pockets on the backs of working people and they are angry. And rightfully so. Irregardless of Peak Oil, which is debatable, we continue to pollute the entire planet with outdated hydrocarbons ...

Drill no more!

Drill No More!
Our nation has had the technology for more than half a century to completely free us of fossil fuels. Sadly, the oil/gas/coal industries own the politicians and buy their elections. That must change. The Albuquerque Raging Grannies urge us to switch to renewable sources of energy immediately, and stop destroying our planet. Tune: "Blowin' in the Wind" by Bob Dylan. If you want to sing this song at demonstrations, here are the lyrics, so you can copy and paste: How many seas will the oil rigs destroy How many oceans must die? How much destruction and damage & loss Can our poor planet survive? How many spills must it take 'til we say That too many life forms have died? Now is the time to make our voices roar We loudly demand it: DRILL NO MORE! Cheney & Bush spent 8 years gutting rules, Working as industry shills Big Oil is STILL not required to comply Or guarantee against spills Profits have won over safety and health Fools chanted "Drill, baby, drill!" Now is the time to make our voices roar We loudly demand it: DRILL NO MORE! How many horrific oil spills before "Drill, baby, drill" is reversed? How many species will be made extinct Before we care for the earth? When will we switch to renewable power? How much is life really worth? Now is the time to make our voices roar We loudly demand it: DRILL NO MORE!
