Stephen Henry Schneider (February 11, 1945 -- July 19, 2010) was Professor of Environmental Biology and Global Change at Stanford University, a Co-Director at the Center for Environment Science and Policy of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and a Senior Fellow in the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment. Schneider served as a consultant to federal agencies and White House staff in the Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. New worry on global warming: mass shrinkage

Shrinky Dinks apparently aren't the only thing to shrink under extreme heat. A new study suggests that global warming just might cause humans to get smaller. A team of university researchers has found that the Sifrhippus, a miniature version of the horse, shrank by 30 percent to the size of a house cat during a volatile 130-thousand year period of warming approximately 56 million years ago. Then, in the following 45-thousand years of cooling, the mini-horse almost doubled in size. The idea that certain mammals are smaller in hotter climates has been common knowledge for some time, but the examination of Sifrhippus's fossils found in the Bighorn Basin offers solid evidence of how species of mammal evolve in response to dramatic shifts in climate. The exact cause of the changes to the miniature horse can't be known and that disruption of ecosystems and migration could also have played a part. But with concerns that global warming is now happening on a scale of hundreds as opposed to thousands of years, we may be left to wonder: if warming continues at this rate, will we have to lower basketball rims in the years ahead? In response to anticipated comments: I know the blogs will tell you that that a correlation between cosmic rays and temperature has been shown, and once you believe this it may be hard to convince you of the science. However let's have a go.... There are two supposed correlations: Svensmark and Friis Kristensen wrote a paper on a correlation between sunspots and temperature during the 20th century, which they attributed to the varying intensity of cosmic rays with solar activity. However, this turned out to be the result of a mathematical error. Cosmic rays have been measured over the last 50 years and they vary with the 11-year solar cycle. There has been no increase at all, whereas average global temperatures have been increasing. Shaviv and Veiser wrote a paper on a correlation between cosmic rays caused by the Earth's passage through our galaxy's spiral arms and global temperature over the last 500 million years. But Rahmstorf and others showed that Shaviv and Veizer may have misinterpreted the meteorite data on which the periodicity that passage was calculated, and the model doesn't fit the data well anyway (by comparison, there's an almost perfect correlation between CO2 levsla dn global temps over the same period.) while the press release that accompanied Shaviv and Veizer's paper announced that their results showed that recent global warming can be explained by galactic cosmic rays, the paper itself said that that recent global warming canNOT be explained by ... The film, made by British television producer Martin Durkin, presents scientists, economists, politicians, writers, and others who dispute the scientific consensus regarding anthropogenic global warming. Global warming melts montana's famous glaciers

In the US state of Montana, the Glacier National Park - an area sometimes called the "Crown of the Continent" - is famous for its snow-capped mountains. But it could soon lose its glaciers due to global warming. Scientists warn if the ice keeps melting at this rate, the park's 25 remaining glaciers could all melt away by the year 2030. However, public opinion polls show that nearly 50 per cent of Americans believe that the seriousness of climate change is exaggerated. Al Jazeera's Rob Reynolds reports from Glacier National Park.
