Fracking and the environment: natural gas drilling, hydraulic fracturing and water contamination

Fracking and the Environment: Natural Gas Drilling, Hydraulic Fracturing and Water Contamination
Gas drilling companies such as Halliburton say the gas drilling technique known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is safe, but opponents contend it pollutes groundwater with dangerous substances. Now, new evidence has emerged possibly linking natural gas drilling to groundwater contamination. ProPublica journalist Abrahm Lustgarten reports federal officials in Wyoming have found that at least three water wells contain chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing.

Gambling with lives, hydrofracking, natural gas and water

Gambling with lives, hydrofracking, natural gas and water
Jordan Cove and the Port of Coos Bay have tried to sell the public on natural gas claiming it is cleaner than other fossil fuels but this is untrue. Dr. Anthony Ingraffea of Cornell University School of Civil and Environmental Engineering explains, "Natural gas burns cleaner than any other fossil fuel but it is not cleaner in its life cycle. Studies that are being done at Cornell University right now that are going to be released soon in peer reviewed journals will show conclusively that the life cycle cost in terms of carbon dioxide emission and methane emission from the development of gas from unconventional sources like shale is at least as dirty as coal."Those who stand to profit from natural gas extraction may turn a blind eye to the harmful effects upon people's lives and future generations and ignore the known damage to the environment when it suits their purpose. It says volumes about their character and taking out a half page ad in a newspaper does nothing to improve it. Betting that geological time is on your side is gambling with lives.

Gorgon project overview producing liquefied natural gas in australia

Gorgon Project Overview Producing Liquefied Natural Gas in Australia
An Emerging Australian Icon Gorgon is a story of energy and the environment as well as technology and expertise. It is one of the world's largest natural gas projects and the largest single resource natural gas project in Australia's history. The Gorgon Project will develop the Greater Gorgon Area gas fields, located about 130 kilometres off the north-west coast of Western Australia. It includes the construction of a 15 million tonne per annum (MTPA) Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant on Barrow Island and a domestic gas plant with the capacity to provide 300 terajoules per day to supply gas to Western Australia. Gorgon LNG will be off loaded via a four kilometre long loading jetty for transport to international markets. The domestic gas will be piped to the Western Australian mainland. A Symbol of Australia's Progress for Decades The complexity and sheer scale of Gorgon is unprecedented. To us, it is a modern-day equivalent of Australia's iconic Snowy Mountains Hydo Electric Scheme -- a long-term, technically complex energy development signifying a dramatic advancement of engineering. And by applying the energy we have most in abundance -- Human Energy -- and combining it with world-class technology and expertise, we're confident of realising our vision. Scouring the world, we've brought together the best and brightest of the industry. Together, we're building Australia's largest single resources project, which in turn can be broken down into the country's largest sub-sea ...

Original Trailer at: www.youtube.com Hydraulic fracturing is common world wide, not just in America, and massively pollutes our fresh water supplies (see my other video on: Water - The Basics of Use, Pollution, and Our Health at: www.youtube.com ). "The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of "fracking" or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a "Saudia Arabia of natural gas" just beneath us. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination." Natural gas extraction is regulated but with numerous exemptions such as such as: 42 USC 300h(d)(1)(B) [underground injection - exemption for fracturing fluid]. You can check out a US Senate report (released in April 2011) on the chemical contents of these frac'ing fluids at: democrats.energycommerce.house.gov "An estimated 30% to 70% of the frac'ing fluid will resurface, bringing back with it toxic substances that are naturally present in underground oil and gas deposits, as well ...

Fracking is a huge disaster waiting to happen but we should just accept the words of corporations that they are not poisoning our very future lives by contaminating our ground water that we need to LIVE. There are chemicals in the injection solution that they will not release the contents of but we should just trust them that it isn't deadly even though we know already that some of them are in fact deadly. They drill through the ground water, fracture the shale, siphon off the gas and release methane and all kind of environmental problems. And people talk or less regulation. Fracking and environmental human rights | sandra steingraber

Fracking and Environmental Human Rights | Sandra Steingraber
2 of 5 "I was concerned before I heard all this," said one resident at the end of the meeting. "Now I am terrified...." She had heard local scientist and world renowned author Sandra Steingraber explain that 40% to 70% water used in the hydrofracking process never sees the light of day again. "When you brush your teeth leaving tap water running, you are not "wasting" water in the sense that it goes into the sewage system and eventually enters a stream, a river, a lake or the ocean, evaporates, turns into rain and and falls to earth to facilitate life once again." But the water frackers poison and then inject into the earth is gone...forever." Steingraber, a biologist who has written extensively about environmental toxins, also expressed grave concerns about the level of carbon emissions and methane leakage which inevitably accompany large-scale industrial hydrofracking operations. The forum "Impacts of Gas Drilling with High Volume Hydrofracturing"was held in Trumansburg, NY on December 8, 2010 and sponsored by Ulysses Gas Drilling Advisory Board, Coalition to Protect New York, and Committee to Preserve the Finger Lakes.

Natural gas found in israel

Natural Gas Found in Israel
In Israel, the largest quantities of natural gas were discovered on the northern coast. Our team in Israel has the story. More than three trillion cubic feet of natural gas were recently discovered at sea, in front of the city of Haifa. The International Noble Energy Company and a number of Israeli partners have been drilling there for the last five years. The way to the site isn't easy. [Dr. Yaakov Mimran, Petroleum Commissioner]: (English) "The first 700 meters you just go through the water column and then you have 3200 meters to drill within the rock until you get to your target." In addition to bringing high economic profits, natural gas does not pollute like the coal does. [Dr. Yaakov Mimran, Petroleum Commissioner]: (English) "This is a great improvement for the economy and environment of the state of Israel." Israel has a few small gas fields and one bigger field at sea near the southern city of Ashkelon. But the field offshore Haifa is the biggest one found in Israel so far. Dr. Mimran says that there is hope for Israels neighboring countries too. [Dr. Yaakov Mimran, Petroleum Commissioner]: (English) "I hope that this discovery will encourage all the investors, both those in the economic waters of Israel and those in the Lebanese and Cyprus waters to increase the speed of their investments in order to get as good results as we are witnessing now." It is estimated that some years of development will be needed before the gas can be distributed to different ...

California natural gas deregulation information

California Natural Gas Deregulation Information
Natural Gas Supplier California Natural Gas Consumers People living in California have the possibility of choosing their natural gas supplier, and therefore they have the possibility of reducing what they pay for this utility. Residents have the possibility of choosing the natural gas supplier with the lowest gas rates. It means that consumers have to choose from receiving gas from their default provider, or they can choose an alternate supplier if they consider the latter to be more convenient. The majority of the gas supplied to the residents of California comes from out-of-state gas basins. Some examples are the ones from Southwest which account for 40% of the natural gas supplied, Canada with a percentage of 20%, Rocky Mountains 20%, and the rest (approximately 20%) belongs to local basins, so therefore the natural gas supplier is located in California. When referring to people that have the possibility of choosing their natural gas supplier we are referring to the "core" consumers, which are the residential and small commercial customers. They account for 40% of consumers. The other category is that of industrial consumers which are also known as "noncore consumers." Natural Gas Supplier Competition The energy deregulation applied in California has offered businesses and core consumers alike the possibility of analyzing the gas market and choosing the natural gas supplier with the lowest rate. It is an amazing opportunity to be able to choose the lowest price to pay ...

Fracking hell: the untold story

Fracking Hell: The Untold Story
Watch more Earth Focus at www.linktv.org An original investigative report by Earth Focus and UK's Ecologist Film Unit looks at the risks of natural gas development in the Marcellus Shale. From toxic chemicals in drinking water to unregulated interstate dumping of potentially radioactive waste that experts fear can contaminate water supplies in major population centers including New York City, are the health consequences worth the economic gains? Marcellus Shale contains enough natural gas to supply all US gas needs for 14 years. But as gas drilling takes place, using a process called hydraulic fracturing or "fracking," toxic chemicals and methane gas seep into drinking water. Now experts fear that unacceptable levels of radioactive Radium 226 in gas development waste. Fracking chemicals are linked to bone, liver and breast cancers, gastrointestinal, circulatory, respiratory, developmental as well as brain and nervous system disorders. Such chemicals are present in frack waste and may find their way into drinking water and air. Waste from Pennsylvania gas wells -- waste that may also contain unacceptable levels of radium -- is routinely dumped across state lines into landfills in New York, Ohio and West Virginia. New York does not require testing waste for radioactivity prior to dumping or treatment. So drill cuttings from Pennsylvania have been dumped in New York's Chemung and other counties and liquid waste is shipped to treatment plants in Auburn and Watertown New York ...

Environmental benefits of altamont landfill lng

Environmental Benefits of Altamont Landfill LNG
Nestled in the hills of the Altamont Pass near Livermore, California, the award-winning Altamont Landfill and Resource Recovery Facility is one of the most sophisticated landfill operations in the country. It is closing the loop on waste using advanced technology and sustainable practices, including the following: Landfill Gas to Energy: The Altamont was an early adopter of landfill gas capture and conversion to energy. Since 1987 it has been producing enough green electricity to power nearly 8000 homes annually. "Closed Loop" Fuel: In 2009 Waste Management opened the world's largest landfill gas to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant at the Altamont. For the next 25 years without another morsel of organic material entering the landfill, the Altamont will produce more than 10000 gallons a day of ultra low-carbon natural gas from the existing organic waste-in-place. Harnessing the gas from trash is the ultimate "closed loop" approach to managing historic waste streams. Altamont LNG is currently powering more than 300 of Waste Management's growing fleet of alternative fuel collection vehicles in California. Reduced Carbon Footprint: Altamont LNG has the lowest carbon density of any fuel available today -- about 85% lower than either gasoline or diesel according to the California Air Resources Board. Use of Altamont LNG is estimated to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 30000 tons a year. The carbon footprint of a solid waste collection vehicle running on Altamont bio ...
