Medical students and seminarians to learn more about aging by living with the elderly

As Featured on Twin Cities Live on Wednesday, November 23rd, 2009. What do elders, seminarians and medical students have in common? This fall, they are all under the same roof. A new initiative designed to bring the generations together is enabling medical and seminary students to move into a senior housing facility at Augustana Apartments in Minneapolis. While medical students have visited residents at the apartments in previous years, the decision to live side by side with the older generation is a novel one. We continue to look for new ways to teach geriatrics, says Dr. Edward Ratner, associate professor of internal medicine at the University of Minnesota and medical director of Heartland Home Health Care in Roseville. Dr. Ratner began bringing students to Augustana in 2000 to give them practical experience with the unique needs of the elderly. Senior housing can be very segregated, says Dr. Ratner. At one time there were 65—95 year olds in a senior setting. Now the average age of those moving in is 80. A large fraction is frail, with little exposure to younger generations, and the potential for much loneliness. Many may lack a neighbor who can easily change a ceiling-light bulb. To remedy the older adults isolation and give them a chance to mentor a younger generation, Ratner proposed that medical students move to the Augustana Apartments to learn from and about their elderly neighbors. Isolation Week 20-26 June 2011: Over one million older people in the UK live isolated and lonely lives. A million more feel trapped in their own homes and one in five older people see other people less than once a week. Between 20th and 26th June, UK charity Friends of the Elderly is holding 'Isolation Week', a social experiment that will see ten members of the public experience social isolation as if they were themselves an isolated older person -- by being confined to their own homes for a whole week without any human contact and with only the TV for company. Caught on tape!!! nurses abusing the elderly

Former Metro Nurses Aide Virgen Caraballo pleaded guilty to seven counts of abusing an elderly woman in her care. 78 year-old Esther Piskor is shown on video getting tossed around like a rag doll by Metro Nurses Aides at their Prentiss Center Nursing Home. A gown was tossed over Ester's face and an aide is seen pulling up bed sheets with Esther inside. Other video shows aides screaming at Esther while tossing her in her chair. Caraballo, 45, of Cleveland, a State Tested Nursing Assistant was employed by the Elisabeth Severance Prentiss Center at MetroHealth. Piskor had been a patient for three years at the Elisabeth Severance Prentiss Center which is located on Scranton Road in Cleveland. She suffers from Alzheimer's disease and requires assistance from staff for all her needs. Concerned for his mother's welfare, Ester's son, Steve, placed the hidden camera in an air purifier in her room. Between April 8, 2011 and May 15, 2011, State Tested Nursing Assistant Caraballo abused the victim while providing her care. "This abuse became well known after the victim's son set up a hidden camera to capture the atrocious treatment his mother received," said Attorney General DeWine. "We are happy to have assisted in successfully investigating and prosecuting this case." "Caring for the elderly is a sacred responsibility," said Prosecutor Mason. "Ms. Caraballo's actions in this case shocked the conscience." As part of her plea Caraballo must forfeit her license and is not allowed to ...
