I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Education Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Songs teach language. Consider a song like "Tom's Diner" by Suzanne Vega. An American teaching English overseas once told us that students love that song.Recently we asked people on the Special English Facebook page to suggest other songs that English learners might like. Noemi Nito wrote: I'm one of those English students who love "Tom's Diner." I started learning English with "Lemon Tree" by Fool's Garden. Another favorite is "Truly Madly Deeply" by Savage Garden. Another person, Asi Tambunan, suggested the song "God Only Knows" by Orianthi. Gyongyi Jako wrote that ABBA's songs from Sweden are perfect for class work. Other good songs for learning English are songs by the Beatles and John Lennon, as well as Louis Armstrong's "Wonderful World." Paul Cifuentes says Bob Marley's songs are amazing for teaching. And Tuti Riel says: My New Year's resolution is to be able to speak English and Mandarin fluently, and be a better person. Juwita Zulmi says she wants to improve her English and get a scholarship to study overseas. Another goal for twenty-twelve: a new boyfriend. Derly Johanna Barreto has these two resolutions: to speak English fluently and to get a job. Jiseon Kim also has two goals: to lose weight and improve speaking English. This was the last time Robert Zoelick attended the spring meetings of the two organizations as World Bank president. Earlier, Jim Yong Kim was officially chosen as the bank's twelfth president.Mr. Zoellick said developing countries are now engines of growth. "Developing countries have provided two thirds of global growth over the past five years," he said. But he added that many developing nations still face big problems. He said all members need to work together better "for their common interest."The United States traditionally chooses the World Bank head and Europe chooses the IMF chief. But developing nations want more influence.The World Bank is a development agency. The IMF supports monetary cooperation and provides loans.IMF chief Christine Lagarde announced that the fund had received promises of over three hundred twenty billion dollars to help nations in trouble. She also said developing nations need to do more to support their emerging markets. They, too, have to address some of their issues, she said. They, too, have to be very attentive to a volatile market situation. "And that means, for some of these emerging markets, refocusing on their domestic growth."Ms. Lagarde said emerging markets need to work toward growth and building demand. The aim is to find ways to support economic growth by improving education and job training programs.The delegates included education ministers and representatives of civil society, business, labor and youth groups. The meeting, held every three years, is known as the Triennial. Ahlin Byll-Cataria is executive secretary of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa. His group organized the weeklong conference.He says there is a missing link between education and employment in Africa. For example, schools need to improve technical training for students who do not continue to secondary education. Mr. Byll-Cataria says educational programs need to be reshaped to better fit the needs of employers. He says this is already happening in some countries including Tunisia, where the association is based. "For instance, where they have to train engineers, there is a lot of discussion between the schools and the companies in order to know the demands of the company, to take them into account in the curriculum, and even in the management of the schools."In Mali, an association of artisans is working to improve the skills of mechanics, wood workers and tradesmen. How a small change in teaching may create better readers

This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Teachers and parents usually call attention to the pictures when they read storybooks to preschool children. But a new study suggests that calling attention to the words and letters on the page may lead to better readers. The two-year study compared children who were read to this way in class with children who were not. Those whose teachers most often discussed the print showed clearly higher skills in reading, spelling and understanding. These results were found one year and even two years later. Shayne Piasta, an assistant professor of teaching and learning at Ohio State University, was an author of the study. She says most preschool teachers would find this method manageable and would need only a small change in the way they teach. They already read storybooks in class. The only difference would be increased attention to the printed text. Ms. Piasta says if you get children to pay attention to letters and words, it makes sense that they will do better at word recognition and spelling. But she says research suggests that very few parents and teachers do this in a systematic way. The report appears in the journal Child Development.More than three hundred children age four and five were observed in classrooms in Ohio and Virginia. Read it: www.juliankitagawa.com How to practice English speaking at home, by yourself effectively Here's a really effective tip I used to improve my Japanese speaking. Most people are really busy in the morning, right? Make use of this time and 'plan' your day in English while you get ready for work or school or whatever. When you get up in the morning you probably always think things like: "Right, make coffee, check the weather, leave the house by seven ... what's my schedule today? Oh yeah, I've got a meeting a two, and I've got to buy something to take to the party tomorrow. I have to got to supermarket too!" Do this in English, and do it out-loud. At first it'll be quite difficult, but with some practise it should get easier and easier as your speaking becomes fluent and automatic. Because you are probably really busy and in a rush in the morning, the pressure-factor will make your practise really effective. If there's anything you don't know how to say in English, try and take a memo then look it up in a dictionary or ask a friend or somebody on Lang-8. If you keep at it for a few weeks you'll really notice how many new phrases you remember - and again, because of the pressure factor you'll find that you'll be able to say these phrases automatically and without thinking about them.
