Breeding objects for digital fabrication 1

breeding objects for digital fabrication 1
This the beginning of work on a genetic algorithm which involves the process of natural and artificial selection in breeding objects suitable for laser cutting. So far I'm only using natural selection. The design solutions converge into one fit solution but over time they are likely to converge into a different solution - different in terms of the phenotype but nearly the same in terms of fitness. The work touches on the issue of ill and well defined problems related to the use of GA in design. More information at www.michalpiasecki.com

Fab.lab.scad - installation time lapse

Fab.Lab.SCAD - Installation Time Lapse
Fab.Lab is the digital fabrication club here at the Savannah College of Art and Design. The club is centered around creating interdisciplinary collaborative installation pieces realized using digital fabrication technology. The design of the digital fabrication installation began with two lines that manipulated the gallery space. The contours were lofted to form a surface that would interact with the space. The final surface was run through a grasshopper script to generate horizontal and vertical ribs. The two sets of ribs were half-lapped together. Each rib was broken down into sections that could be laser cut using an 18″x32″ bed. Once the ribs were laser cut, they were glued together to create the whole rib. Finally, the ribs were assembled together to allow for an installation to manipulate the built environment. The objective of the installation was to maximize the space that it would occupy with the least amount of material and investigate the scale that could be cut using a 18″x32″ laser cutter. Play it forward fabrication

Play It Forward Fabrication
Play It Forward is an interactive, motion-sensing installation that activates play and human motion by automatically donating a small amount of money each time someone plays with it. The project was intended to suggest a new kind of temporary urbanism that uses design and technology to affect social change. Inspired by the geometry of movement, Play It Forward was designed and constructed using advanced parametric and digital fabrication methods. Strategically located sensors on the piece identify activity and respond with visual feedback. Passersby interact with the installation by playing a simple game with the sensors and LED lighting, and by playing donate to charity. Play It Forward was designed by Hiroshi Jacobs, Jonathan Grinham, and Kash Bennett, and was installed for the closing party of Digital Capital Week in Washington DC.

The freed - a handheld digital milling device for craft and fabrication

The FreeD - a handheld digital milling device for craft and fabrication
The FreeD is a hand-held, digitally controlled, milling device that is guided and monitored by a computer while still preserving the craftsperson's freedom to sculpt and carve. The computer will intervene only when the milling bit approaches the planned model. Its interaction is either by slowing down the spindle speed or by drawing back the shaft; the rest of the time it allows complete freedom, letting the user to manipulate and shape the work in any creative way. The idea of the FreeD is to allow designers to engage with the physical material and not just with the CAD environment, and to let them do their interpretations to the virtual model. By that, designers can create something that is one of a kind, unique based on a generic design.

Cutter

Cutter
Cutter is a tangible interface for generating three-dimensional digital models by hand crafting polystyrene foam. The user pulls, pushes, and rotates a custom hotwire cutter to sculpt, cut, and shape foam cubes. The position of the cutting path is processed in real-time by a computer to visualize the cutting process and generate a 3D model. Cutter aims to provide an intuitive way to explore physical form by combining traditional craft with digital fabrication. Copyright © Kuan-Ju Wu & Karl DD Willis www.interactivefabrication.com

Digital design & fabrication in architecture - ghent workshop kristofcrolla

Digital Design & Fabrication in Architecture - Ghent Workshop KristofCrolla
Digital and information-based design methods and production techniques are explored and applied increasingly in contemporary architectural design procedures. Innovative material applications and production methods not only lead to the constructability of a new formal language: they let designers communicate directly with production facilities. The resulting possibilities for mass production of customised building components allow for the realisation of structures of unforeseen complexity. In spring 2009 fifty architectural students from Sint Lucas, Ghent, Belgium joined this four-day Design + Build + Exhibit Competition Workshop during which they experimented with the unlimited potentialities of this design method. Assisted by tutors Jeroen van Ameijde en Kristof Crolla three selected structures were designed and built. The challenge lied in transforming 2000m2 of cardboard into three component based, human scale structures. Those were to be composed entirely from self-similar, mass produced, cardboard pieces that connected into one whole using an intelligent, rule-based system. A high speed rollercoaster race decided which three designs from the initial 16 teams remained to be built in the last 36 hours by all participants. Success criteria were buildability, functionality, originality and effective use of variation within the structure.

Practical bim-to-cnc workflow: big empowerment for the small firm

Practical BIM-to-CNC Workflow: Big Empowerment for the Small Firm
Once only in the realm of the 'starchitects' and academics, digital fabrication has become surprisingly affordable and accessible. Couple it to BIM tools, and you have one heck of a system in place for efficiently designing and building anything at the drop of a hat. For a small firm, this is a powerful combo that opens up all sorts of possibilities. But, just as the challenges of IPD make us change our traditional process, we've found that we've had to change our process to fully leverage this new way of working. Today I'll be presenting a five-step agile yet practical process we've worked out for using BIM and digital fabrication together on real-world projects. I'll also be talking about concepts and problems that arise, and new opportunities that one can take when working this way.

Universal laser cutter - idf - bsu - in

Universal Laser Cutter - IDF - BSU - IN
This is a Universal Laser System single laser cutter. This operation is a rastering operation, which means it functions like a printer, mapping laser intensities to a greyscale value. The material you see being etched is a thin magnet which was originally intended for printing in an inkjet printer. These "technobus" signs were then separated and placed on the outside of a vehicle in which massive amounts of techno would be played. The settings to raster this were: Speed : 79, Power : 100, PPI : 1000. The cutter is one of two at the Institute for Digital Fabrication Lab in the Architecture Building on the campus of Ball State University in Muncie, IN.

Memory cloud

Memory Cloud
Memory Cloud is the winning commission awarded to RE:Site (Norman Lee and Shane Allbritton) and METALAB (Andrew Vrana, Joe Meppelink, Michael Gonzales and Thomas Behrman) by Texas A&M University for the new Memorial Student Center 12th Man Hall. Through a competition and short-list interview process the team demonstrated the ability to harness the potential of programmable LEDs, remote sensing, parametric design and digital fabrication to create an open ended narrative of the story of the University through animated silhouette imagery of past and real-time present student life on the campus. Texas A&M, a place of deep traditions that are played out on the football field at every game and in the everyday lives of students will create the imagery that will be played within the layers of the LED matrix at different speeds and durations. Parametric design created a unique cloud form that creates a landscape within the student center where monumental and ephemeral figures will pass through the space, blurring the distinction between past and present.
