TEDxCanberra - Boho Interactive - Chaos, complexity, balloons and bunnies
Science, art, theatre and big complex problems collide when Boho appear. They help to bring science education and understanding to the wider community. In this performance at TEDxCanberra 2011, science theater group Boho demonstrate in "18 one-minute talks" that Complexity Theory really can be understood by the average person. Not only that, they bring to the fore a number of global issues and discuss them in the context of complex systems interaction. You have to see it to believe it!

Complexity theory and its relationship to educational change

Complexity Theory and its Relationship to Educational Change
Professor Mark Mason (Hong Kong Institute of Education, Associate Dean (Research), Faculty of Education Studies) takes a look at how to initiate and sustain change, in education systems, through the lens of complexity theory. The goal, he says, is to intervene at every possible level, and from every possible angle... ie. to come at the problem from as many perspectives as possible. Mark uses metaphors like apartheid, consciousness, the butterfly effect, QWERTY keyboards, and the victory of VHS over Betamax, to illustrate that the current situation concerning education reform, behaves similarly. This recording was made at the conference entitled, "Optimizing Talent: Closing Educational and Social Mobility Gaps Worldwide" at the Salzburg Global Seminar (Dec. 2011) which was made possible by generous partners, such as ETS, DeVry, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Ford Foundation China, The Freeman Foundation, The McKnight Foundation, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, The Nippon Foundation, and The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. www.salzburgglobal.org .

Complexity monks - theoretical animation in art education

Complexity Monks - Theoretical Animation in Art Education
This video is an animated depiction of my interpretations of complexity theory. I utilized stop-motion animation and all figurines were purchased randomly at a thrift store. The two young monks represent my alter egos. During my first semester as a doctoral student, I struggled with accepting the personal truths of my peers. Through complexity theory, I learned that embracing diversity of all kinds can lead to the synthesis of valuable and unique knowledge. The two monks are adversaries at first but later realize that they can learn from each other even though their personal philosophies clash. Near the end of the animation, the two monks collaborate and ponder over a couple Enrico Fermi questions. The monks illustrate the intrinsic element of connection (Connectivism). Knowledge will cease to exist or can be misinterpreted without human connection. I did not write a traditional research paper, I created this video. Post-modern theories, like complexity theory or connectivism, can sometimes be intimidating or at least unrealistic to implement in the K-12 classroom. K-12 education is a strict modernist system. I created this video to present complexity theory in a more aesthetically pleasing form and to promote the utilization of complexity theory and art making technologies, like stop-motion animation, in K-12 classrooms.

Quantum computing and the limits of the efficiently computable - 2011 buhl lecture

Quantum Computing and the Limits of the Efficiently Computable - 2011 Buhl Lecture
Scott Aaronson, an expert in the realm of computational complexity theory and the founder of ComplexityZoo.com online encyclopedia of computational complexity theory delivered Carnegie Mellon University's 2011 Buhl Lecture. In his lecture titled "Quantum Computing and the Limits of the Efficiently Computable," Aaronson discusses what quantum computers are, whether they can be built on a large scale, and what's known today about their capabilities and limitations. He goes beyond quantum computers to touch on speculative models of computation, including closed time-like curves and nonlinearities in the Schrodinger equation — an equation that describes how the quantum state of a physical system changes in time. An associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Aaronson's work on the subject of quantum computing has included limitations of quantum algorithms in the black-box model, the learnability of quantum states, and quantum versus classical proofs and advice. He writes a popular blog (www.scottaaronson.com/blog). For more on the Buhl Lectures, visit: www.cmu.edu

Complex economies, simple economics: how new research is challenging conventional economic policy

Complex Economies, Simple Economics: How New Research Is Challenging Conventional Economic Policy
At this event panelists discuss how recent theoretical and empirical work has called into question the core tenants of the neo-classical doctrine—that markets are stable, are driven by rational actors responding solely to price signals, and require little role for government in driving growth. Indeed, this new work, much of it based in the fields of behavioral economics and complexity theory, have shown that economic systems act less like well-structured systems in equilibrium and more like chaotic, complex systems whose outcomes are unstable and can vary widely based on seemingly minor changes.
