How australia can help build indian and chinese cities -- sustainably - by professor peter newman

humanities.curtin.edu.au Curtin University's Faculty of Humanities Inaugural Professorial Lecture presented Professor Peter Newman's lecture on Sustainability, as part of the 2011 Australian Innovation Festival, on Tuesday 24th May, 2011. The world is watching as India and China rapidly modernise with a mixture of awe and fear. The growth of Indian and Chinese cities is dramatic and some see them destroying the planet as they consume fossil fuels so rapidly. But there is a counter trend as these cities begin to adopt innovation in sustainability. After a recent tour of Asia and research on the trends in green urbanism in Asia, Professor Newman will outline the opportunities unfolding for Australia, in our region, to shape urban development more sustainably. Professor Peter Newman is the Director of the Curtin University Sustainability Policy (CUSP) Institute. He has been involved in the development of the concept of sustainability since its inception in the late 1980s, both in academia and in government and recently received the inaugural Sustainable Energy Association's Hall of Fame Award. He is on the Board of Infrastructure Australia and is Lead Author for the next Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Report on Transport.

Set in Hangzhou (Chinese: 杭州; Hangzhou dialect: ɦaŋ tsei; Mandarin pinyin: Hángzhōu Mandarin pronunciation: [xɑ̌ŋtʂóʊ] ), formerly transliterated as Hangchow, is the capital and largest city of Zhejiang Province in Eastern china. Governed as a sub-provincial city, and as of 2010, its entire administrative division ("shì", 杭州市) or prefecture had a registered population of 8.7 million people [2]. The Urban agglomeration of the Hangzhou metropolitan area (杭州市区) has a resident population of 3.9319 million as of 2003, of which 2.6367 million are permanent residents. There are 1.91 million residents in the six urban core districts. A core city of the Yangtze River Delta, its position on the Hangzhou Bay 180 kilometres (110 mi) southwest of Shanghai gives it economic power, and moreover, it has also been one of the most renowned and prosperous cities of China for much of the last 1000 years, due in part to its beautiful natural scenery; the city's West Lake is its most well-known attraction.

The White House announced Thursday that Pittsburgh will host the next G-20 summit on Sept. 24 and 25, a spokesman confirmed.Press secretary Robert Gibbs made the announcement during a press briefing at the White House. "Hosting a global economic summit will allow the world to see that Pittsburgh is a great, progressive city with a distinguished history and a limitless future. We've recognized the region's appeal for years and are thrilled that others will have the same opportunity," said Chuck Ardo, spokesman for Gov. Hank's adoption announcement

This is Hank's adoption announcement. The question I've been getting the most is "Is he really Chinese?" Yes, he is. Hank has Albinism This site www.albinism.org does a much better job explaining it than I can! We were in China for 2 weeks. Hank was from the Suzhou Social Welfare Insitute (orphanage) which we were allowed to visit but we spent most of the time in the cities of Nanjing (for the China paperwork) and Guangzhou (for the US paperwork). I recently had to change the sound track. It was Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel but even though I wasn't making any money off this, they still flagged the video. His song, he gets to choose so fine...I'll deal with it. You Tube has pre-approved songs so I switched it to Creed's "With arms wide open" It doesn't synch up quite as well but it's better than taking the whole video down. Enjoy!

Shanghai red rain

This video is a compilation of footage I shot while recently teaching English in Shanghai. Though the urban cityscapes that often make up much of modern Asian mega cities often seem gray and brooding, I noticed, when going back through the imagery, that almost every frame seemed to be alive with some trace of red, whether in the clothing that people were wearing or the flowers, signs, etc. Peter Gabriel's song Red Rain, therefore seemed a fitting compliment to the hustle, bustle and sometimes frenetic nature of modern inner city life in China.

In China gambling has long been part of life, but with a society increasingly divided by rich and poor, the Chinese have become obsessed with winning easy money. As they pin their hopes on games of luck and fortune, four gamblers bring us on an emotional search for belief and identity in money-centric modern China. "I beg you Jesus, to save me, from this gambling problem," a preacher says as he holds his hand to the head of a sobbing young girl. The girl, her voice tremulous, repeats his words carefully. She represents a surprisingly large amount of the Chinese population that, as Peter a dedicated gambler at the race-track tells us, is obsessed with easy money: "They're all dreaming they will be millionaires. So that makes people crazy." According to Michael, a taxi driver whose gambling lost him his family, this is a cultural obsession. "It is Hong Kong's culture to put money first. It's like we're competing with each other." In Hong Kong and Macau the desire for money and material goods hangs over those who live and work there, and speculating on the stock exchange, backing a horse, or gambling on a roulette table has become a way for ordinary people to try and reach this dream of wealth and fortune.
