Capitalism has done more to bring prosperity to the world than any other economic system. Nevertheless, free markets continue to be assailed by academics, politicians, pundits, musicians, and the public in general. Indeed, it isn't cool to be a fan of capitalism these days. Instead, most young people would much rather wear a Che Guevara t-shirt and read Noam Chomsky than think about how their lives have been enriched by free-market, capitalism. Borne of my frustration with all the youtube videos attempting to explain socialism and capitalism based on misconceptions (this applies to both sides of the political spectrum) this video is an attempt to provide a brief, concise explanation of capitalism for the uninitiated. The goal is to present an in-depth understanding of both systems and what they imply. What does it mean to say that socialism is based on "social" or "cooperative" ownership? Did markets fail in post-soviet economies?

Students, get a full week of this at a summer seminar: lrnlbty.co According to Prof. Pavel Yakovlev, several post-Soviet economies have struggled to obtain prosperity since the breakup of the Soviet Union. Many argue that this is a failure of capitalism. To Prof. Yakovlev, this has not been a failure of capitalism, but rather, has been a failure to create the conditions necessary for capitalism. To see whether or not this is true, Prof. Yakovlev looks for differences in GDP growth rates between post-Soviet countries. He finds that Azerbaijan and Poland have performed well, with average GDP growth rates of over 4% per year. These countries, in comparison to the other post-Soviet countries, have more economic and political freedoms, lower levels of corruption and inflation, and more transparent institutions. They also happen to be located on the outer edge of the soviet bloc, where corrupt Soviet style institutions did not take root. Other post-Soviet countries like Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan have experienced dismal economic performance because they have failed to create a market friendly environment. They also, in comparison to the top performing post-Soviet economies, have high rates of corruption and inflation, low economic and political freedoms, and poorly defined and enforced property rights. Markets did not fail in poorly performing post-Soviet economies, but rather, were never actually given a chance to succeed. My 2 cents on Socialism, Communism and Capitalism. 1. There have never existed Socialist or Communist countries. 2. Countries that do use these words in the names of the countries or claim to have such system are ALL in reality Totalitarian Dictatorships. 3. There remain only 2 such countries today: North Korea and Cuba. The list used to include USSR, China, Vietnam, Poland, DDR, Czechoslovakia, Albania, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Cambodia, Laos, Mozambique, Angola and many more countries. 4. The best political litmus test to see what category the country belongs to is to see if its citizens can leave it freely: if you get a bullet in the back of your head trying (like crossing the Berlin Wall), it's a Totalitarian Dictatorship aka "Socialist" or "Communist". 5. Does capitalism fail in some countries? Yes! In what countries? Where the private property and intellectual property laws are lax and corruption is high. 6. Please check where your country belongs based on any of the 2 indexes that use different criteria: International Property Tax Index: www.internationalpropertyrightsindex.org (top 3 in it are Finland, Sweden and Switzerland and the last 3 are Venezuela, Libya , Yemen but it excludes Cuba, North Korea) or Heritage Foundation's Index of Economic Freedoms: www.heritage.org (top 3 here are Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia and the last 3 are Cuba, Zimbabwe and North Korea.) 7.
