The eagle nebula

I've been out back in the Sierra Nevada doing some astronomy. This is just something I threw together as part of a bigger project. The whole sky timelapse is done with a canon, with a 4mm sigma lens with about 1minute exposures. The close- ups were done with a 50-135 mm zoom, with the final exposure being done with a canon at prime focus of a cpc1100 This work is available under a creative commons, share-alike, attribution license (CC-SA-A). Bike lights check-point

Apr/May in New Zealand means daylight savings is over and winter is coming. I was invited to observe and assist with a bicycle light check-point. Everyone who didn't have lights got some cheap lights, courtesy of the city council (these are lights that just barely meet the legal requirements). We also had discount vouchers for good lights, redeemable at several of the local bike shops. There were chocolates for people with good lights. A few people also drew attention from the police for not having helmets (a legal requirement in NZ) and/or riding on the footpath. Good moments in il-2 sturmovik: cliffs of dover - a montage

Here's a montage out of a potpourri of footage I had lying around from the last few months. With the new patch approaching which will hopefully fix the serious stability issues, let us commemorate the good aspects of the current version which have made this game fun to play (despite the CTD's and freezes). All footage was recorded in multiplayer games on the ATAG server. The clips were edited together by using Windows Live Movie Maker. Openstreetmap: a year of edits 2011

This video shows all edits made to the OpenStreetMap project in 2011. OpenStreetMap is a free geographic database that anyone can edit; it's like the wikipedia of mapping data. This animation shows all additions and modifications of nodes (white flashes) and cumulative edits (purple) in 2011. It gives a good overview of the effort that 1000s of contributors put in to make OpenStreetMap the best source of mapping data. This animation has been made by Derick Rethans entirely out of free and open source software. The added data is parsed and rendered by PHP and its extension, and the mapping and animation itself with POV-Ray.
