Tribute (african drum duo) by dave gerhart - mvt. 2 & 3

Tribute (African Drum Duo) by Dave Gerhart - Mvt. 2 & 3
IronWorks Percussion perform the second and third movements of "Tribute" by Dave Gerhart. The IronWorks Duo gave the premiere performance on October 12, 2008. For more information about the IronWorks Percussion Duo, please visit: www.ironworkspercussion.com Program Notes: Tribute, a three-movement work for any six drums for two players, was written as a tribute to three figures that have had an influence on my musical career. I wrote Tribadacious (movement 1) as a homage to one of my teachers, Brad Dutz, and his composition Ewe Day. The syncopated rhythms and different tone colors (rim, dead strokes, drum shell and open tones) are all inspired by the African drumming from the Ewe tribe (Ghana). ||: Tribute :|| (movement 2) is a homage to Steve Reich and the minimalist musical movement. The ostinato figures and additive processes are reminiscent of Reichs compositional style. The third movement, Djunute, is a homage to the Djembe music of the Ivory Coast. This fast, aggressive movement uses repeated rhythmic interlocking figures and soloistic phrases invoking the spirit of the music from Guinea and Mali. The performance features 6 Ewe drums being played with sticks, brushes and felt mallets. —Dave Gerhart

African dance - patrick bukassa

African Dance - Patrick Bukassa
Played and Inspired by Patrick Bukassa (Copyright): African dance refers mainly to the dance of Sub-Saharan Africa, and more appropriately African dances because of the many cultural differences in musical and movement styles. These dances must be viewed in close connection with African music, as many African languages have no word to define music. These dances teach social patterns and values and helps people work, mature, praise or criticize members of the community while celebrating festivals and funerals, competing, reciting history, proverbs and poetry; and to encounter gods. The most widely used musical instrument in Africa is the human voice. Although nomadic groups such as the Maasai do not traditionally use drums; in villages throughout the continent, the sound and the rhythm of the drum express the mood of the people. The drum is the sign of life; its beat is the heartbeat of the community. Such is the power of the drum to evoke emotions, to touch the souls of those who hear its rhythms. In an African community, coming together in response to the beating of the drum is an opportunity to give one another a sense of belonging and of solidarity. It is a time to connect with each other, to be part of that collective rhythm of the life in which young and old, rich and poor, men and women are all invited to contribute to the society. African tribal dance or African folk dance is performed on almost all the occasions in the people's everyday life. The African folk ...

(3/12)battlefield i the battle of north africa episode 5 (gdh)

(3/12)Battlefield I The Battle of North Africa Episode 5 (GDH)
SUBSCRIBE TO EXCELLENT WORLD WAR II VIDEOS UPDATED WEEKLY When Italian dictator Benito Mussolini declared war on the Allies on June 10, 1940, he already had more than a million men in the Italian army based in Libya. In neighboring Egypt, the British Army had only 36000 men guarding the Suez Canal and the Arabian oil fields. Italian forces became a potential threat to Allied supply routes in the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. The early part of the North African Campaign was plagued by a lack of supplies on both sides. Sweeping battles took place that culminated with one side or the other's supply lines growing too long while the other's grew shorter. Major engagements of the campaign include the Battle of Gazala, First Battle of El Alamein, and the Second Battle of El Alamein. Most of the battles took place far to the east of the Italian bases and supply depots in Libya. By 1942, the Royal Navy had beaten the Italian fleet out of the Mediterranean, and allowed their own transports free movement. American forces landed in western North Africa in 1942. The Siege of Tobruk took place from April to August 1941. The Allied garrison, largely Australian, backed by British artillery and tanks, captured the fortress in the first Allied drive through Libya, and held it against great odds. The Western Desert Campaign, or Libya-Egypt Campaign, began on September 13, 1940, when Italian forces stationed in Libya launched a small invasion into British-held Egypt and set up defensive forts ...

Prokoviev - violin concerto no. 2 (3/3) kyung wha chung

Prokoviev - Violin Concerto no. 2 (3/3) KYUNG WHA CHUNG
Sergei Prokoviev The Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 63, written in 1935, is a work in three movements: Allegro moderato Andante assai Allegro, ben marcato It premiered on 1 December 1935 in Madrid with the French violinist Robert Soetens and the Madrid Symphony Orchestra conducted by Enrique Fernández Arbós. Prokofiev wrote it after the first performance of his Sonata for Two Violins, by Soetens and Samuel Dushkin, which pleased him greatly. Dushkin had just recently had a concerto written for him, by Igor Stravinsky, so Prokofiev did the same for Soetens. Prokofiev was on a concert tour with Robert Soetens while he was working on the concerto, and later wrote, "The number of places in which I wrote the Concerto shows the kind of nomadic concert-tour life I led then. The main theme of the 1st movement was written in Paris, the first theme of the 2nd movement at Voronezh, the orchestration was finished in Baku and the premiere was given in Madrid." The Spanish had liked the premiere so much that they sent a delegation of musicians to thank Prokofiev afterwards. The first two British performances of the concerto were again with Robert Soetens: in 1936 under Sir Henry J. Wood, and in 1938, under the composer. Soetens played the work many times, all over the world, concluding with the premiere performance in South Africa in 1972, when he was aged 75 (he continued appearing in public until age 95, and died in 1997, aged 100). The concerto is more conventional than the ...

Béla bartók - string quartet no. 2, iii

Béla Bartók - String Quartet No. 2, III
String Quartet No. 2 in A minor, Sz. 67, BB 75 (Op. 17) (1915-1917) I. Moderato II. Allegro molto capriccioso III. Lento Novák Quartet Bartók was living in seclusion outside Budapest during the years of the First World War, and some of this isolation may have made its way into his String Quartet No. 2, which was composed between 1915 and 1917. Nevertheless, unlike its predecessor, this quartet is possessed of a classical detachment and Apollonian poise that sets it apart from the intense emotionality of Bartók's pre-war compositions. The second quartet is in three movements, an Allegro molto capriccioso framed by two slow movements, marked Moderato and Lento, a disposition that seems to anticipate the arch forms that would later fascinate the composer. The first movement opens with soft murmuring from second violin and viola on the close interval of the minor second; major and minor seconds will play an important role throughout in the harmonic profile of the work. The main theme is pensive, a rising fillip on an augmented fourth setting the unsettled tone. As in other works from the era, especially the yet-to-come violin sonatas, Bartók here approaches a type of atonality, a "pseudo-atonality" that is partly a function of his radical, harmonically advanced polyphony, wherein melodies that have clear and easily comprehended shapes intertwine with each other in ways that produce great intervallic and harmonic tensions; yet these same processes also yield gem-like moments ...

On August 27, Washington DC-based singer/songwriter KUKU, BBE recording artist Siji, and singer/songwriter and guitarist Sparla Swa will take the stage at one of DC's best venues for live music within the U Street corridor, DC9 Nightclub. On this night, three multilingual Yoruba musicians will bridge the gap between their West African culture and their adopted American culture. They will share original songs and stories from their respective music projects to an audience that will range in age from 21 to 60, the majority being 1st and 2nd generation from the continent, as experienced in the artists' many live performances in various venues around the US and abroad. A DJ will play West African-inspired rhythms of soukous, afrobeat, reggae and soul. This is the fourth installment of a series that started at New York City's SOB's. This event continues to build a loyal fan base as the emerging pan-African movement of 2nd generation and African Americans are becoming increasingly politically astute and unified. By bringing together music and culture, professionals and a rapidly growing independent music scene, Yoruba Acoustic Soul provides for a wonderful experience for patrons and musicians. Ww ii battle for malta part 3 of 3 1942 rare color film

WW II BATTLE FOR MALTA PART 3 of 3 1942 RARE COLOR FILM
SB 6.7.12 P Indra Offends His Spiritual Master, Brhaspati. We are now actually seeing this in America. The entire American nation has tried to advance in material opulence without striving to produce ideal human beings. The result is that Americans are now regretting the wholesale criminality of American society and are wondering how America has become so lawless and unmanageable. As stated in Srimad-Bhagavatam (7.5.31), na te viduh svartha-gatim hi visnum: persons who are unenlightened do not know the aim of life, which is to return home, back to Godhead. Therefore, both individually and collectively, they try to enjoy so-called material comforts, and they become addicted to wine and women. The men produced in such a society are less than fourth class. They are the unwanted population known as varna-sankara, and as stated in Bhagavad-gita, an increase of varna-sankara population creates a hellish society. This is the society in which Americans now find themselves. Fortunately, however, the Hare Krsna movement has come to America, and many fortunate young men are giving serious attention to this movement, which is creating ideal men of first-class character, men who completely refrain from meat-eating, illicit sex, intoxication and gambling. If the American people are serious about curbing the degraded criminal life of their nation, they must take to the Krsna consciousness movement and try to create the kind of human society advised in Bhagavad-gita (catur-varnyam maya ...

Have you heard from johannesburg

Have You Heard From Johannesburg
Have You Heard From Johannesburg is a powerful seven-part documentary series by two-time Academy Award nominee Connie Field that shines light on the global citizens movements that took on South Africa's apartheid regime. It reveals how everyday people helped challenge and end one of the greatest injustices the world has ever known. Have You Heard begins with the story of freedom fighters in South Africa who are systemically killed, jailed or exiled for resisting their political oppression. Embattled South Africans call on the global community to take action, laying the groundwork for a decades-long international campaign. People around the world take up the anti-apartheid cause, challenging their governments, powerful corporations and other institutions to face up to the immorality of their collaboration with apartheid. Have You Heard follows three generations of the struggle inside South Africa and battles waged in sports arenas and cathedrals, in embassies and corporate boardrooms, at rock concerts and in gas stations around the globe. Pulling together the many threads of international anti-apartheid action for the first time in any medium, Have You Heard from Johannesburg is an inspiring example for citizens and movements around the world. Blood diamonds: the true story (part 3/4)

Blood Diamonds: The True Story (part 3/4)
Full playlist: www.youtube.com Documentary series exploring infamous historical events. This installment examines the little-known truth about how the worldwide diamond trade has funded wars across western and central Africa, leading to the deaths of millions of people. Sierra Leone on Africa's west coast is one of the poorest nations on earth, with an average income of just 220 US dollars. Conversely, the country is rich in natural resources, with verdant tropical forests stretching for miles and a plentiful source of high-quality diamonds below ground. In some cases, diamond mines are used to cement the economy of a poor nation and drag the populace out of poverty, but in Sierra Leone they have brought only chaos and misery. Blood diamonds or 'conflict diamonds', explains Alexander Yearsley, senior campaigner for international pressure group Global Witness, "are diamonds mined and sold by rebel movements, particularly in Africa, that are used to finance arms purchases." Between 1991 and 2001 in Sierra Leone, a brutal civil war between government forces and a rebel group called the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) raged, with 75000 people being killed and two million being displaced. For many of the survivors, lasting reminders of the conflict exist in the form of deliberate amputations, which were to become a trademark atrocity of the RUF. "They committed every war crime in the Geneva Convention, then invented one of their own," explains Greg Campbell, author of the ...

Dr. Cornell West: The greatness of Abraham Lincoln is predicated on the courage and vision of the abolitionist movement that kept the kind of pressure on Abe Lincoln such that he became not simply a run of he mill president during a crucial moment, but a visionary and courageous one who broke the back of white supremacist slavery, who was able to preserve the Union in such a way that the Union could move into a new era, with slavery no longer an incubus upon its neck, an albatross around its neck. And so when you think of Lincoln's first inaugural address, which called for an endorsement of the unamendable amendment, the first proposed 13th Amendment that said in fact slavery would be permanent in America. Frederick Douglass bought a ticket to go to Haiti when he heard that. Can you imagine if in fact if there had been a reconciliation between the North and the South with an amendment to the Constitution that said slavery forever? Abe Lincoln supported that. Now was that pragmatic? Was that opportunistic? Was that unprincipled? For Frederick Douglass that was barbaric. Lincoln changed his mind. His greatness was that he changed. He supported colonization of black people, to send free blacks to Africa or Central America. He changed his mind when he called for black people voting in New Orleans in April 1865. Three days later ...

Occupy movement, zizek, anarchism, a postmodern perspective on why you should care?

Occupy Movement, Zizek, Anarchism, a Postmodern Perspective on Why You Should Care?
The Occupy Movement, Zizek and Anarchism, Why You Should Care? A Postmodern Perspective from the new book: THE MEANING OF YOUR LIFE Secular Help for the Puzzled, Disappointed or Depressed Copyright © by Marius Croeser Get your copy here: www.amazon.com Are you puzzled about the meaning of your life? Are you disappointed by traditional answers? In this book you will discover the building blocks to meaning and find hopeful answers to your questions. Perhaps surprising to some, is that there are many people who have spent years within their organized religious tradition only to continue to find themselves struggling with Meaning. Equally, there are non-believers -- even Atheists -- who have given themselves over to an unnecessary, meaningless pessimism. If you have asked similar questions about personal Meaning, or if you are slightly disillusioned by traditional answers, or even if you are just curious, then this book is for you. Asking questions about meaning is normal. Not only is it normal, it is also important for your continued mental well-being. Rather than with organized religion, Meaning (and a meaningful life) is to be had in abundance within the secular world; within our very earthly and human realm. It is my assumption that, in reading this book, you are interested in learning about secular Meaning; the word secular is defined as "not pertaining to or connected with religion". Our meaning does not have to superficial or cliché -- and meaning is not like some ...

Usa for africa - we are the world hd

USA for Africa - We are the World HD
"We Are the World" is a song and charity single originally recorded by the supergroup USA for Africa in 1985. It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian for the album We Are the World. With sales in excess of 20 million copies, it is one of the fewer than thirty all-time singles to have sold 10 million (or more) copies worldwide. Following Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" project in the UK, an idea for the creation of an American benefit single for African famine relief came from activist Harry Belafonte, who, along with fundraiser Ken Kragen, was instrumental in bringing the vision to reality. Several musicians were contacted by the pair, before Jackson and Richie were assigned the task of writing the song. Following several months of working together, the duo completed the writing of "We Are the World" one night before the song's first recording session, in early 1985. The last recording session for the song was held on January 28, 1985. The historic event brought together some of the most famous artists in the music industry at the time. The song was released on March 7, 1985, as the only single from the album. A worldwide commercial success, it topped music charts throughout the world and became the fastest-selling American pop single in history. The first ever single to be certified multi-platinum, "We Are the World" received a 4× certification by the Recording Industry Association of America ...

East african community national anthem flag and map

East African Community National Anthem Flag and Map
The East African Community (EAC) is an intergovernmental organisation comprising the five east African countries Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. While generally, the member nations are largely in favor of the East African Federation,[citation needed] informal polls indicate that most Tanzanians (80% of its population) have an unfavorable view. Tanzania has more land than the other EAC nations combined, and some Tanzanians fear landgrabs by the current residents of the other EAC member nations. Land scarcity is a recurring issue in East Africa, particularly in Kenya, where clashes on the Kenyan side of Mount Elgon in 2007 left more than 150 dead and forced at least 60000 away from their homes. The first major step in establishing the East African Federation is the customs union in East Africa signed in March 2004 which commenced on 1 January 2005. Under the terms of the treaty, Kenya, the region's largest exporter, will continue to pay duties on its goods entering the other four countries until 2010, based on a declining scale. A common system of tariffs will apply to goods imported from third-party countries. The EAC was originally founded in 1967, but collapsed in 1977, causing celebrations and wine-toasting in Kenya. It was officially revived on 7 July 2000.EAC is one of the pillars of the African Economic Community. In 2008, the EAC, after negotiations with the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern ...

Christian family at deedat residence - discussion (3/7)

Christian Family at Deedat Residence - Discussion (3/7)
Part (4/7): www.youtube.com Christian Family at Deedat Residence - Discussion. In this video Sheikh Ahmed Deedat discusses matters regarding the Bible with three guests in his home. Sheikh Ahmed Deedat: In 1986, the King Faisal Foundation awarded the King Faisal International Prize for SERVICE TO ISLAM, to a South African who is more or better known than many dignitaries in their own countries. This was the first time that this prestigious award has been awarded to a South African. The recipient of this award was a man totally dedicated to his faith and its propagation and who was not afraid to challenge any one to a debate to settle once and for all the matter, who has the good news right? He was none other than Sheikh Ahmed Deedat, reverently known and called UNCLE by those who hold him in high esteem and admiration. The award came after a lifetime of struggle to propagate Islam and to defend Islam against the onslaught of the missionaries. Finally, he was given recognition by the international Muslim community that he deserved and focused more sharply the attention of the Muslim world on the most important aspect of his work, the challenge to propagate Islam. This was his life long ambition to focus the Muslim world's attention and resources on the propagation of Islam, and at last he succeeded. What a moment of jubilation, achievement and personal gratification for Sheikh Deedat the award was, a turning point in his life. Sheikh Deedat did not have much formal ...

African americans in world war ii: a legacy of patriotism and valor - part 1 (1997)

African Americans in World War II: A Legacy of Patriotism and Valor - Part 1 (1997)
1997 www.amazon.com Watch the full film: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com The US armed forces remained segregated during World War I. Still, many African Americans eagerly volunteered to join the Allied cause following America's entry into the war. More than two million African American men rushed to register for the draft. By the time of the armistice with Germany in November 1918, over 350000 African Americans had served with the American Expeditionary Force in on the Western Front. Most African American units were relegated to support roles and did not see combat. Still, African Americans played a minor role in America's war effort. Four African American regiments were integrated into French units because the French suffered heavy losses and badly needed men after three years of a terrible war. One of the most distinguished units was the 369th Infantry Regiment, known as the "Harlem Hellfighters", which was on the front lines for six months, longer than any other American unit in the war. 171 members of the 369th were awarded the Legion of Merit. 157th IDRed Hand flag drawn by General Mariano Goybet The 371st and 372nd African American Regiments were integrated under the 157th Red Hand Division commanded by the French General Mariano Goybet. They earned glory in the decisive final offensive in Champagne region of France. The two Regiments were decorated by the French Croix de Guerre for their gallantry in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. Corporal Freddie Stowers of the 371st ...

This presentation was filmed on June 21, 2010 at the Fletcher Summer Institute for the Advanced Study of Nonviolent Conflict.
