READ! I added this video for a project regarding Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactors, watch and enjoy. [Edited with the YouTube Video Editor (www.youtube.com Here is a petition for those interested in the US, take a look. thoriumpetition.com Here is a petition for the UK, please sign! epetitions.direct.gov.uk It won't take long. Also, because so many people have asked: The main downsides/negatives to this technology, are basically politics, corrosion and being scared of nuclear radiation. Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactors were created 50 years ago by an American chap called Alvin Weinberg, but the American Government realised you can't weaponise the by-products and so they weren't interested. Another point, yes it WAS corrosive, but these tests of this reactor were 50 years ago, our technology has definately improved since then so a leap to create this reactor shouldn't be too hard. And nuclear fear is extremely common in the average person, rather irrational though it may be. More people have died from fossil fuels and even hydroelectric power than nuclear power. Thanks for watching. And please, please share this video with as many people as you can. The more that know about this, the greater chance of change. R.

LFTR in less than 5 minutes
I am using this for my PEST (Political, Economic Systems and Theories) class. Please do not delete!!!!! I had to make a minor alteration cutting out the part where it talks about fuels for cars and then cutting the video a little short in order for my group to want to use it in our powerpoint. Other than that, it's perfect. I'm going to buy at least 10 copies of the DVD from ThoriumRemix.com and redistribute them among my college friends. This is the most promising kind of nuclear energy I've seen. Alvin Weinberg and Eugene Wigner were geniuses. I hope Kirk Sorensen or somebody else can pull this off.

Lftr vs nuclear waste - plutonium, americium, curium (transuranics) can be fissioned / disposed

LFTR vs Nuclear Waste - Plutonium, americium, curium (transuranics) can be fissioned / disposed
Sign the petition! ThoriumPetition.com - LFTR does not produce transuranic waste. It burns up essentially all of the fuel because we don't remove fuel from the reactor until it's a fission product. It is these transuranics like plutonium, americium & curium which present the biggest challenge to nuclear waste disposal. They have moderate half-lives (neither decay quickly nor low levels of radiation) and have complicated decay chains. All of today's pressurized water reactors (every commercial reactor operating in North America) use less than 1% of the energy stored in the nuclear fuel. This is why the spent fuel rods are difficult to manage. LFTR can consume almost all of its fuel. This big increase in efficiency means less nuclear waste to deal with. And because LFTR (Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor) uses LIQUID fuel, it is far easier to partition the "waste" to extract valuable by-products, such as medical isotopes for cancer treatment.

Energy from thorium: a nuclear waste burning liquid salt thorium reactor

Energy From Thorium: A Nuclear Waste Burning Liquid Salt Thorium Reactor
Kirk Sorensen's Tech Talk, delivered at Google on July 20, 2009. Successfully developing a liquid-fluoride thorium reactor (LFTR) would essentially solve our planets energy problems for thousands of years, because it would allow us to fully utilize the energy in natural thorium, which makes up 0.0012% of the Earths crust. Most of the research and development work for this technology was done by Oak Ridge National Labs back in the 50s and 60s. They were working to a different set of overall objectives, nevertheless, there are many lessons to be gleaned from their work that can help us to avoid pitfalls and develop LFTR into a high-performance, high-reliability power supply.

Liquid fluoride reactors: a new beginning for an old idea

Liquid Fluoride Reactors: A New Beginning for an Old Idea
Google Tech Talks February 19, 2009 ABSTRACT Slides for this talk are available at: www.slideshare.net Speaker: David LeBlanc David's Ph.d in physics was completed at University of Ottawa (1998) on high temperature superconductors. During this period, he developed a great interest to pursue both fission and fusion reactor design basics, which separately cumulated in a long term fellowship from the Canadian Fusion Fuels Technology Project (later ITER Canada) for his work on the use of high Tc superconductors in the fusion field and also work for Atomic Energy of Canada Limited on worldwide reactor design comparisons. Since then he has been teaching at the Carleton University physics department and continued his investigations primarily in the field of Molten Salt Reactors, also known as Liquid Fluoride Reactors. David founded Ottawa Valley Research Associates Ltd to expand these efforts and has completed a license agreement with a European firm with a goal of development of a new generation of Molten Salt Reactors.

The liquid fluoride thorium reactor: what fusion wanted to be

The Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor: What Fusion Wanted To Be
Google Tech Talks November 18, 2008 ABSTRACT Electrical power is, and will increasingly become, the desired form of energy for its convenience, safety, flexibility and applicability. Even future transportation embraces electric cars, trains, and chemical fuel production (jet fuel, hydrogen, etc.) based upon an abundant electrical supply. Although existing energy sources can and should be expanded where practical, no one source has shown to be practical to rapidly fulfill the world's energy requirements effectively. Presently there is an existing source of energy ideally suited to electrical energy production that is not being exploited anywhere in the world today, although its existence and practicality has been know since the earliest days of nuclear science. Thorium is the third source of fission energy and the LFTR is the idealized mechanism to turn this resource into electrical energy. Enough safe, clean energy, globally sustainable for 1000's of years at US standards. This talk is aimed at explaining this thorium energy resource from fundamental physics to today's practical applications. The presentation is sufficient for the non-scientist to grasp the whole subject, but will be intriguing to even classically trained nuclear engineers. By providing the historical context in which the technology was discovered and later developed into a power reactor, the story of thorium's disappearance as an energy source is revealed. But times have changed, and today, thorium ...

Integral fast reactor introduction

Integral Fast Reactor Introduction
This video was originally uploaded by Steve Kirsch here: ifr.blip.tv I have re-uploaded the video here for a wider audience. Full credit to him for discovering this video and placing it on the internet. Describes the features and benefits of the Integral Fast Reactor. Major features are it uses existing nuclear waste for fuel and it generates no long-term radioactive waste; it is all recycled within the facility. This video was made in the early 1990s, although everything is still relevant the same today as we face the same if not greater energy issues. The IFR was canceled in 1994 for political reasons despite having the ability to solve all the current real and perceived problems with nuclear energy. For more discussion please visit: skirsch.com bravenewclimate.com We should build the IFR along with other sources of clean abundant power for a sustainable, ecologically friendly future.

The LiFePO4 is lighter than NiMH and lasts for 2000 complete cycles. We need to make these electric car batteries in robotic factories, to dramatically lower costs. That way, we have a form of mobility that survives past the great oil age. Because I don't want my kids to be left without fuel for the car... Aside from solar and wind which can provide ALL the jobs needed to rehabilitate a screwed up global economy... Did you know that there is an UNLIMITED ENERGY SOURCE that is better than FF's and conventional nuclear? It is about 1000000 times as powerful as coal and does not require hundreds of thousands of square miles of solar collection (But I want that solution for economic reasons!). It is based on the efficient fission of thorium and SOLVES the worlds nuclear waste dilemma! Please search LFTR and the molten salt reactor. www.google.com It was proven and demonstrated at ORNL. It is not pressurized, requires no water (which likes to turn into hydrogen and explode when solar flares knock out the grid for a prolonged amount of time) and spits out only 1% of the wastes. Because it is so efficient, those wastes decay back to safe as lead levels in about 300 years (which is far ...

Flibe logo animation

Flibe Logo Animation
I put this animated logo together for Flibe Energy, a Huntsville based R&D company involved in reviving a lost nuclear technology based off of Thorium in a molten salt solution. More can be found at flibe-energy.com as well as here on YouTube. I put this together in Motion 4 over about eight hours or so. It took so long because I was putting a few new tools to use. For instance, the two orbiting particles had their motion linked to the grey swoosh lines, so they would move properly as the one element was rotated. The style is my interpretation of the company's existing logo and webpage, which I can not claim to have any involvement it. The flickering film filter present at the start of the animation was added because I felt the logo was retro in design, befitting the era the technology came from. However, I removed the filter by the time the logo is fully readable as the company is modern, as will be the improvements they have planned for molten salt technology.

Save the uranium-233, explore space, save lives

Save the Uranium-233, Explore Space, Save Lives
Google Tech Talk January 13, 2011 Presented by Kirk Sorensen. ABSTRACT Uranium-233 does not exist naturally, but about a ton of the stuff was transmuted from Thorium-232 at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the 1960's. Some people would have us blend this exceedingly rare element with natural uranium for disposal. However, Uranium-233 can be used in an advanced nuclear reactor with interesting properties. Uranium-233 is the cleanest burning fissile material. Employed as an initial fuel load for a Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor, this small supply of Uranium-233 can be the match to ignite a process that produces a huge supply of electricity along with small quantities of useful fission products. In particular, the LFTR produces small amounts of Plutonium-238, essential for NASA's deep space missions; Technetium-99m, exceedingly valuable for medical imaging; and other specialized isotopes used in cancer treatments. Nuclear power reactors can be engineered to produce many valuable materials through transmutation belying the term "nuclear waste". Kirk Sorensen is chief nuclear technologist at Teledyne Brown Engineering in Huntsville, Alabama. He has been researching the nuclear fuel cycle for many years in connection with a strong interest in thorium as a planetary energy source. He is also a PhD student in nuclear engineering at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville under Dr. Laurence Miller. He runs a blog called "energyfromthorium.com" and is active in the Thorium ...

Oil sands extraction - lftr in alberta?

Oil Sands Extraction - LFTR in Alberta?
Extracting crude from Alberta's Oil Sands is extremely energy intensive. One way of lowering our CO2 footprint, would be using a liquid-fluoride thorium reactor (LFTR) as a power source. Is such an approach politically feasible in Canada? Is lowering CO2 footprint of extracting crude from oil sands significant, when the resulting fuel will ultimately release CO2 itself? Looking for feedback from the oil patch and nuclear researchers.
